Filoli, country estate of William Bowers Bourn II and his wife Agnes Moody Bourn in Woodside, California (south of San Francisco) is a lovely place. Now owned by the National Trust, the house and gardens are open to the public. Yes, the name of the estate does sound Italian but, actually, it’s an acronym formed by combining the first two letters of the key words of William Bourn's credo: "Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life." Good advice!

This is the last week for my Filoli photos that haven't been posted yet.

Today's photo is looking south along up to and through Filoli's "Yew Allee", which is the southern part of the south-to-north centerline of the gardens, starting at The High Place at the southern tip of the garden and leading to the walkway visible here, which then extends northwards past the estate house. Before the trees north of the estate grew, one could stand in The High Place and look down Yew Allee, past the gardens and house, past the land beyond, and see the southern part of the Crystal Springs Reservoir, which Bourne also had an interest in, as the largest shareholder in the Spring Valley Water Company (later to be bought by San Francisco to become their municipal water system).

A rose flower blooming.

I am not the flower photographer in our household — that would be Patty’s forte. But seeing so many flower photographs (hers in the house and online), I can’t resist trying my hand at this occasionally. In late May we headed to a large Bay Area garden to spend the morning with this subject, and I came back with a few photographs.

This week is a tree week. And today counts as both Tuesday and Wednesday, since I forgot to post yesterday :) The second photo is a Kashmir Cypress, which unfortunately is no longer there, having died of disease only a year or two after this photo was taken.

Filoli's Sunken Garden, from two different angles. The Sunken Garden is where you first enter the Filoli garden estate if you skip the house tour. The centerpiece of the Sunken Garden is a shallow rectangular pool containing two fountains, and surrounded by a small lawn and boxed gardens. The Sunken Garden is situated between the Garden House and the patio of the main house.
