The combination of whimsical setting mixed with melodrama is probably the main draw.

I think the reputation jrpgs get as trope heavy is deserved But we dont know how to understand the place of story in games. Complaining about tropes in jrpgs is like complaining about jumping in platformers. Story in games is a contextualizing exercise. It defines why we push buttons

@ami_angelwings To dredge my well-worn hellbird bit over onto Mastodon, I'm going to say FINAL FANTASY IV's Cecil Harvey who textually commits a war crime despite acknowledging that it was wrong simply because his king told him to and expects pity for how guilty he feels afterward.

He then spends nearly the whole game after he rebels constantly faceplanting and failing to stop the villains from accomplishing anything right up until the final stretch where he has his magic space uncle's help so it doesn't really count when he ostensibly saves the world.

He is then inexplicably rewarded by being crowned the new king despite lacking any sort of political qualifications beyond having formally been an air force captain.
