@bullivant @Paulo I'm convinced the first three chapters are what gives Ulysses the reputation of being 'a difficult book'. I always recommend first time readers to skip those and go straight to Bloom and his cat.
FW is so intensely musical that it has to be read out loud at least in your own inner ear. I believe there's a good full audio book come out recently which I must get my hands upon.

Finnegans Wake by James Joyce was first published in its entirety on 4th May 1939 after segments had been published in serialised form in Parisian literary journals. The book is well known for its experimental style and its reputation as one of the most difficult works of fiction in the Western canon.
