Another of Glasgow's fantastic gushet building. This one is on the corner of Argyle Street and Minerva Street in Finnieston. It was built in the 1850s and was possibly designed by Alexander Kirkland.

It's one of those building I think a lot of people pass every day without really looking at it and realising quite how impressive it is.

I don't know why, but the Empire seems to be making its presence felt in Finnieston at the moment!

Disused railway tracks at the base of the Finnieston Crane on Stobcross Quay in Glasgow.

These lines would be used to bring good made in and around Glasgow down to the banks of the Clyde to be loaded by the crane into ships and exported all over the world. This included items as large as steam locomotives, explaining why such a massive crane was required.

If you've ever wondered what a small toy monkey is doing hanging from the wires above Minerva Street in the Finnieston area of Glasgow, our newest plaque explains the sad story behind why it's there.

The Finnieston Bar on Argyle Street in Glasgow. Built around 1800 as a dover's inn for those bringing cattle and other livestock into the city's meat markets, this building has since become engulfed as Glasgow expanded westward. It remains as a reminder of what was there before the tenenemt blocks which are now seen as being so characteristic with the west of the city.

The elegant symmetry of the Finnieston Brass Foundry.

Dating from the late 1800s, it wasn't designed by a famous architect and it's not decorated in fancy sculptures and stonework, yet it's a building of functional beauty and it remains an important remnant of Glasgow's industrial past.

It will soon be knocked down and replaced with very generic-looking boxy flats.

Sealed up entrance to the abandoned railway line under Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow. This tunnel led from the old Kelvin Bridge Station to what is now Exhibition Centre in Finnieston. The line was closed in the 1960s.

The next place where this line is visible is from the beer Garden of the Finnieston Bar on Argyle Street.

A late afternoon view across the Clyde to Finnieston and the Scottish Events Campus.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a view which I never tire of as you can see so many of the different layers of the city all at once.

The Argyle Street Ash Tree, Finnieston, Glasgow.

This tree was accidently planted in 1850. This means it has been a feature of the west end of Glasgow for longer than the Kelvin Hall (1927), the Kelvingrove Art Gallery (1901), Glagsow University (which moved to its current location in 1870), and even Kelvingrove Park (1852).

I pass the Sandyford Henderson Memorial Church in the west end of Glasgow several times a day. This afternoon was the first time I'd ever noticed this bat in its stonework!

It just goes to show that no matter how famiiar you are with Glasgow and its buildings, there's always new things to discover.

The Last of the Titans

Titan cranes were once amongst the most powerful cranes on the planet. Of the eleven that are left in the world, four can be found on the banks of the Clyde in western Scotland.

These are the Stobcross Crane, the Barcley Curle Crane (both in Glasgow), the Titan in Clydebank and the Janes Watt Dock Crane in Greenock.
