One of the 14 fiords in Fiordland, Doubtful Sound is particularly awe-inspiring. It’s many hidden arms of water with peaceful coves make for an incredible expedition in the deep south.

(2/2) Kepler Track in NP from Brod Bay, climbing steadily through fog (📷1) a further 1.5h to a limestone bluff (towards Luxmore Hut). The fog abruptly dissipated as we climbed; views thru the canopy confirmed Lake Te Anau was still enveloped (📷2). The bluff (📷3) served as a lunch stop before descending thru the forest (📷4). 2h 20 min to return to control gates.

(1/2) Kepler Track in NP from Te Anau control gates to Brod Bay. Little to see of Dock Bay due to dense AM fog (📷1). Fungus of the day: Tremella fuciformis (📷2). Canopy mostly beech, but the endemic piupiu/ crown fern/ Lomaria discolor was dominant on the ground (📷3). 1.5 hrs along lake to Brod Bay, also shrouded in fog—so here it is 3h later on our return (📷4)!

Te Anau in is the gateway to NP. Lake Te Anau covers 342 square km, has a shoreline of 483km, is 202m above sea level & is 396m deep. The town’s waterfront commemorates takahē (Porphyrio hochstetteri) found nearby with a sculpture (📷1). It has a water taxi stand (📷2) & jetty for tour boats; a helipad (📷3); & dock for South Island’s only seaplane (📷4).

A travel/ chore day. Began at Moke Lake nr. , shaped like a giant hoof print, lit well at dawn (📷1). Made our way down the Kingston Arm on Lake Wakatipu (📷2). Passed thru a Red Tussock Conservation Area on SH94/ Southern Scenic Route, nr. Mossburn in (📷3). Arrived in Manapouri on the edge of NP to find the Wee Bookshop closed for winter 😢.

The utter heartrendering awe and excitement of a new (old) book arriving in the mail for the new archive library... you carefully unpackage, hold it in your hands savouring it, then finally you open the pages and there are other archives and old records folded up within it!! This made my day.

We finally made it out for a wee break... Was meant to be a few days, but sadly broken new to us 2nd hand tourer put paid to that... So we took the old girl sports bike out for a wee blat up the road to .

Pretty awesome view from the balcony if I may say so, pity it's just the 1 night, we're both back to mahi after tomorrow. Great wee motel too, awesome price being a weekday.

The tūī, (parson bird) or Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae are singing in the 🌞 outside.
