This fossil fir cone is about 30 million years old, and it's of a type commonly found in sandstone nodules in an area of Germany about halfway between Frankfurt and the Luxembourg border. As noted elsewhere, the design is so good that it has hardly changed over time.
I'm not sure where I got this photo. If anyone recognizes it, can you share the photographer's name so I can give proper credit?
