Trying to photograph this tiny and very mobile #Firecrest on #ShuttertonBrook #Dawlish today made me think how much more challenging it is than firing a shotgun at a bird. Why don't people put their guns down and pick up a camera to prove their skill? It is so not easy but fun!

But almost half a million birds arrive here in autumn from Iceland, Scandinavia and Arctic Russia to take advantage of our mild winter climate and plentiful food. As well as feeding in shallow water, wigeon also graze on land, plucking tender shoots of grass with their short, stubby bill. #nature

A lucky day out & about. I stopped on a woodland track & a Firecrest went around & around me. A rarer but less elusive bird returned (Isabelline Wheatear) not far from where I'd gone so I nipped along to see it. And then, a Scaup, a pair of Goldeneye and a Sandwich Tern were all reported on the River Exe virtually on my way home. All of this lovliness in the #Devon sunshine.

Birders will be familiar with the expression 'record shot only', where we're trying to get a photographic record of what we've seen but the bird is proving elusive. Yesterday it was this Firecrest giving me the run (fly?) around.
These are rare birds here in south Wales. This may be the same bird found by a fellow birder on 3/11, which I re-found on 4/11, as it was in roughly the same area of overgrown vegetation.
