Firefall
Firefall is a relative newly discovered phenomenon discovered in Yosemite National Park not to be confused with the old firefall that was manmade.
This is a tough shot to get and some years it doesn't happen.
This is Horsetail Falls. In February, for roughly 10 days, the sun comes into alignment and reflects off of the rocks to create this phenom. Today was an interesting day in #yosemite. A chinch of rock came off the face of El Capitan and blocked Southside Drive to traffic. The NPS was taking folks out of the park the wrong way along Northside Drive.

Thankfully, they still let folks walk a ways along Southside to get pictures of #Firefall. Unfortunately, the light didn’t pop tonight. It was pretty diffused by low clouds out to the west. My favorite shots of the day were the ones I took waiting for sunset.

Today, the plan had been to hike Four Mile Trail for a photo overlooking the valley. Unfortunately, they've closed the trail this year & I don't want to risk a $5,000 fine for a photo.

A few years ago, they closed the area along Northside Drive to protect the riverbank. However, they closed far more than just the riverbank, making it impossible to get a photo from that portion of the Valley.

Now, the only way to get a unique view of #Firefall is to snowshoe to the valley rim from Badger Pass.

After coming to #Yosemite for #Firefall each of the past five years, I'm done coming into the Valley for it. Each year, the experience has been worse & it's no longer worth it.

It could be that I've seen it & have the photo, but I've always wanted different compositions. Unfortunately, the #NPS keeps forcing people into a smaller & smaller area to take the photo, so we all end up with the same shot.

#Firefall tonight was a bit of a dud. This was the best photo I got, and it was taken a good fifteen minutes before it should have peaked. The photo is also edited far more than most of my photos are, what we saw with our eyes looked nothing like this.

Every #Firefall, I want to write a plan to ban cars from #yosemite and have the entire place served by bus rapid transit. There is currently a line of cars ringing the entire valley.

Ok, maybe I was mistaken about #Yosemite not being that crowded this weekend for #firefall. For the first time in five years of coming here for this, I’ve had to park at Yosemite Village. The parking lots at the Lodge and Camp 4 are full. The line for the bus from the village to the lodge is infinitely long, because the buses are so packed they’re not even stopping to pick folks up. Yosemite really needs better transit options and to become car-free.

I’ve got to say, I was expecting a lot more water flowing over Horsetail Falls this year. However, I’m finding the permitting system they’ve implemented for #firefall to be great. It is quite empty in the valley today.

Making my first stop for my #Firefall weekend. Thankfully, Horn Photo in Fresno has a remote shutter release for my Canon 5D. For some reason, I couldn’t find mine before I left, so I’m picking up a new one. Then, onward to Yosemite Valley.
