Mike Watt - Ball-Hog or Tugboat?

I'd been into #fIREHOSE and The #Minutemen but didn't follow Mike Watt too much after that. This album, for all of its guest vocalists and rotating cast of musicians is unexpectedly consistent listening. I pulled it up because one of the four tracks featuring Carla Bozulich is on my discover weekly spot machine playlist today.

Thank you, excellent source/review article I wasn‘t aware of.

This is a topic that has interested me for some years now, and I note that Pomerantsev’s 2016 work is cited, although it was this article of his https://jods.mitpress.mit.edu/pub/ic90uta1/release/4 that piqued my interest in his work.
Amusingly, I used the “firehose” analogy in a much longer, fairly discursive article I wrote, partly in response to Pomerantsev, but exploring a lot of facets and dimensions of communication and propaganda in the internet age, including reference to psychological literature.

It’s sometimes disheartening to see how easily and how often people are drawn into the same simple trap of assuming that correcting a torrent of lies means they win some game, when only they are playing.

@schmurnan @JeanEvergreen Also - keep in mind that there's no algorithm to bring your "hot" toots back up to the top, even if that particular toot is getting heavy #engagement. i.e. if a 1000 ppl comment on this toot, their response toots show up in the #firehose, but not your original. So if the responses are #engageful, then people will drill through, scroll around/up and see your "head" post and follow or heart or whatever.

6,8 are by design/on purpose. There is no "global search" but instead everything on #mastodon work with #hashtags and explicitly following people of your interest.

That means: there is also no algorithm in your home, but a simple #firehose of #toots.

Am I the only person who likes an #AlgorithmicFeed in #socialmedia?

I now follow >2000 people on the birdsite ... I got to that number by hitting Follow on people who say interesting stuff. I let the algo take it from there.

Why be unfollowing people as much as following them?

Reminds me that 15 years ago Twitter had *track* which allowed you to follow every mention of a keyword (no # needed) - I used to track things like #apple and #nz and #wellington when there was only 1 mention a month. That grew to 1000s and as mentioned in that post only a few mentions of that event in 20,000 results. I fed the #firehose into an XMPP client. #backintheday
