I've had a bunch of little hiking goals for the area in southern Trinity County, California that have been sitting and stewing in the back of my mind, some for 5-6 years. Over the last couple weeks, I got out to complete them. It was a grand trip even if it left one goal still unsatisfied and the car came back on the donut. (AKA the "compact spare".) Wondering how the snow above Ruth, California is looking now. There's still two more fire lookouts on South Fork Mountain I need to visit! As you can see, there's not much left of the one on Cold Spring, but still more than was on Blake.
(South Fork is 40 miles of high ridge, making it one of North America's longest ridges. It supported 4 fire lookouts!)

Another shot from last summer, taken from the lookout catwalk. When you live in a backcountry lookout, this is how you get your groceries and supplies. Pack days are the best days ever, and so much cooler than Amazon Prime!
