Wrote a first wee piece using the voice of possibly the most important secondary character in my yesterday, and I signed it in their voice too.
Jack is a mysterious pamphleteer advocating revolution in Grizelle's country of Greater Goddodin, and Grizelle becomes obsessed with their work, sending Grainne to hunt them down and bring them to the West to help plan overthrowing the Patriarch

This short exchange in my WIP does some outsized work for a mere 50 or so words. It achieves:

Physical description: Teo is slightly taller than Jonas, when the rest of his people are quite short.

Plot development: why yes, Teo IS tall for a Ystheran and uncomfortable when strangers notice it. Could there be a reason for that?

Character development: Look at Jonas dipping a toe in the flirtation pool. Look at Teo failing to pick up what he’s putting down, and being typically standoffish to boot. Look at Jonas being totally unperturbed at being called short.

World-building: Everyone belongs to the empire, but certain people get to define who belongs the most. A clue (among a sprinkle of others) about who fits where and how, without an info-dump.

I feel like these 50 words save me and the reader at least a page or two of long-winded description. Meanwhile, in my newest WIP, I feel like I’m writing page after page of backstory and info-dump and I can’t yet find the little bits of dialogue that would let me sneak it in instead…

Finally crossed the 50k mark of my . Time to start collecting the threads to tie them all together. As this is a fantasy novel all about story telling, everything must be connected, from politics to magic to religion.

My plan is to reach 100k before tightening it down to 80k or so, as editing surely will be needed πŸ€“

, I generally write everything longhand (), then transcribe, editing a bit (or more than a bit) along the way ( or ).

My frustration: That transcription/first-revision process substantially takes longer than the zero draft. Sure, I know the revision process is always arduous, but … still frustrating.

By the way, all y'all who shit a book in three months, please line up. I want to backhand the lot of you. :)
