If I was advising the New Zealand fishing industry I would tell them that straight up lying to people isn't a great way to build trust.

Poor condition snapper in the Hauraki Gulf has been known for well over 5 years.

Given that bottom trawling in the Hauraki Gulf has decreased as reports of poor-condition fish have increased this seems like a weak link.

The snapper population within the Hauraki Gulf is the highest it has been in 30 years so resource competition is likely playing a big part.

The innovative pulse trawl technique uses electrical stimulation to catch flatfish. This is now prohibited in the , despite overwhelming multiannual scientific evidence that this gear significantly reduces unwanted ecological and environmental impact of .

Anecdotal information like this needs to be taken with a grain a salt but is still useful to help inform wider discussions.

Great platform developed by DTU-AQUA aims to provide accurate information on , to support science-based of the Danish waters. It shows the spatial distribution and intensity of all bottom trawl gears used by Danish and provides quantitative pressure indicators as advised by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

Kate Evans has consistently been the best journalist writing about fisheries in Aotearoa New Zealand for quite a few years now.

"A CLEAN SWEEP?

Every year, New Zealand vessels drag trawl gear across nearly 100,000 square kilometres of our seafloor. We are the only nation still trawling on the high seas of the South Pacific. Can we make bottom trawling better? Or should we ban it altogether?"

This is really important research in the Hauraki Gulf and for all ecosystem-based fisheries management.

"With relatively low diet flexibility across the whole food web, a 10% reduction in the biomass of any single group of small/medium pelagic fishes led to a 3.5–5.8% reduction in the total biomass of birds, a 2.0–2.4% reduction in the biomass of cetaceans, and a 0.4–0.6% reduction in the biomass of snapper."

"Three stratified random surveys completed between 2018–2020 off the west coast North Island using RV Kaharoa provided a comparison with historical surveys last carried out in 1999. The time series reveals a substantial increase in has occurred since 1999, but a decline in pre-recruit red was apparent. John biomass also trended downwards."
