'Prime nearshore areas are often already filled with pens, and some coastal communities have resisted new farms, concerned about their impact on views, recreational boating, and commercial fishing.' Regulators, researchers + environmentalists worry about pollution from tightly grouped fish, as well as the parasitic lice + diseases that can spread from farmed to wild salmon, not to mention escaped fish mixing their genes with wild salmon. Wisconsin can now boast of the world's largest aquaponic greenhouse, producing up to 2 M kilograms of salad greens a yr. Adjacent lies a facility with house-sized fish tanks. Wastewater is treated with vertical sand filters + the nitrogen + phosphorus are utilized by the mammoth greenhouse. '“Sometimes the water is so clean it looks like the fish are swimming in air,” says Summerfelt, an engineer who is head of R&D at the company, called Superior Fresh.' Salmon are anadromous, so have early + late life phases in freshwater. These farmed salmon never touch a drop of salt water. AquaBounty, a firm headquarters in Massachusetts, has Norwegian roots. Since 1991 they have worked on commercializing a strain of Atlantic salmon genetically engineered for faster and more efficient growth. @RussCheshire Absolutely agree! #RSPCA #greenwash of #toxic #salmon #aquaculture #farms is a shameful stain on their reputation and credibility.

As someone who (for my sins!) used to be part of the #FishFarming #industry in #Scotland I believe that nothing about the current #corporate #multinational business model is #sustainable, or #fish #welfare friendly.

#RSPCA_assured badge is a complete con of consumers.
I doubt very much if #SSPCA would stoop so low for #filthyLucre from filthy fish😡
