Ho-ly crap! Turns out the reason I couldn't copy directly from the old drives to tne new NAS was because of some weird handling of credentials in Windows.

I had to reboot the machine, and suddenly I'd lost write access to the drives in the NAS. I had to disconnect from them, delete the saved credentials, reboot the machine, and reconnect them!

But now copying directly from the old drives work! So. much. time. saved...

With only 220GB of spare space to temporarily store the files, copying ~10TB is going to take a while…
