This week at the blog I'm talking about games that I'm working on; an homage to 2e that's morphing into its own thing, and an ultralight *thing* inspired by some FKR principles and my first experiences playing TTRPGs. Hopefully this is the start of weekly Friday blogging, so watch this space for more.

@Lane That’s cool. We do something similar for our #fkr games.
Here’s another cool way to combine them: https://methodsetmadness.blogspot.com/2022/01/extremely-simple-combat-maneuvers-osr.html
I want to give back to the community so committed release our Named #ttrpg toolbox. It is very niche so I expecting 25 downloads, but after 20 days it’s gone better with 88. But more importantly almost 300 views, which means a broader audience are definitely seeing it. And some great positive feedback.
Useful lessons for me on marketing, but not critical as probably the last time I’ll be putting something out apart from the final version.

@PrimevalFantasy Yes! This is why I turned to #fkr to try and get the simulation without the crunch. But I’m also an avid mechanic, so I miss designing lots of fiddle bits. I try to sustain myself by watching long videos on how Vikings fought instead of making up long ruleset. ;)
@QuestingJC Sure! This is just a current-mood-toot, and not intended as an universal truth.
It comes from wrangling with a system and wanting to throw my hands in the air and go full #fkr!
I'm trying to find a balance where there is a system to make things feel grounded, and yet freedom enough to make people engage with the fiction rather than mechanics.
@trollishdelver Strongly agree. Especially the combination of these two: “you need lots of character options to run a long campaign”. Traveller showed this was bs, but it got in my head until I ran a long campaign #fkr style with no HUD.
@Kobiac In case it helps, we solved this with turning points. Each #fkr conflict has a handful of moments (maybe 3-5) that make a big difference. We play the combat as a conversation until we find a turning point and then set the stakes and roll. Also works for arguments, duels, battles, etc. So with a pirate battle, it is the broadsides and boarding actions, and maybe a player rolling to snipe their captain, not individual musket shots or cutlass swings.
@UbiquitousRat
@UbiquitousRat Great episode. Paul explained the benefits of #fkr really clearly.
Talking FKR With Paul Jennings, in which illumination about Free Kriegspiel is sought and granted: https://shows.acast.com/622365def51ea90015c7a387/64c398c80a9bc70011d52966 #ttrpg #podcast #fkr Big thanks to Paul!
Re-watching #communitytv and it still holds up but with a few problematic elements. Up to the (first) AD&D episode, which I like because it mainstreams #ttrpg play 12+ years ago and is hillarious.
But also because the way they play is a little #fkr and it has character reveals that work in a way that inspired our Dark Secrets mechanic.
Not sure it is my favourite episode, but definitely in the top few. YouTube discussion if you haven’t seen it:

I feel like Frankenstein working on an #ttrpg chimera. I’m taking the #pbta conversation core where the players add ideas but roll fancy dice. But I’ve replaced the limbs of moves with fiction-first #fkr moderation. And the Abby Normal brain has strange emotions, relationships and secrets that create a #FiascoRPG like frenzy.
But by applying lightning and letting it out into the public I’ve discovered a handful of others with similar strange obsessions, so my Named monster is not truly alone.

@LeviKornelsen 1/2 I prefer TTRPG tools that are mechanically elegant and efficient, and convey strong sense-of-place (in other words, rules-lite and theme-heavy). I like playing #fiction_first and to #find_out_what_happens with #Open rules systems. Began with #TunnelsandTrolls, then #Indie, then all about #OSR, but of late have been running #Beeswox (my complilation of #World_of_X resources) and started to explore #FKR. Preferred genres are #SwordandSorcery, #Space_Adventure, #Bronze_Age_Supers

Oh no worries. I see you've discovered my pins and maybe some of the threads that hang off them.
If you want any suggestions like using #OSR or #FKR or even #NSR there's quite a thriving community of lovely people here. @LeviKornelsen often seems to know what's up!
Feel free to ask and I'm no expert but I'll do what I can to help navigate around. I've only been here since November so very new myself. 😀
Another aquisition in my TWERPS quest. This is one of the volumes or supplements that I was the most excited about and under $10.
The cover alone reminds me of when I played a Griffin Rider in a Pathfinder game.
At long last, my review for The Knight's of the Road is now live! I had a lot of fun reading through the game and writing the review. The game has provided all kinds of Inspiration!
