Linux Apps Tour: Flameshot, an open-source screenshot software with a built-in editor
Flameshot is a free, open-source, cross-platform tool for taking and annotating screenshots. It comes with a feature-rich built-in editor to immediately customize your screenshots.

Maybe #Flameshot is the lesser-known life-changing Linux software. What even is better for interactive screenshot capture on #Linux?
I just made a #review #DiscoverReview for #Flameshot the #Screenshot app on #FlatHub #Discover

We had yet another troll on #Flameshot. Came back after 1 year and 2 months and started throwing cheap punches.

I've done my Sunday #Arch #KDEPlasma updates, which ofc included all the new #KDE #Gear 23.04 apps, one of which is the completely redesigned #Spectacle. It now has an [optional] on-screen annotation tool similar to #flameshot. Unfortunately, either it now has a design oversight, or an outright bug [prolly https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=468077 ?]. I simply can't see a way to draw UNfilled rectangular / elliptical shapes. One respondent in that B/R said to reduce the opacity, but HOW?
Anyone here know pls? π€·ββοΈ

@omartwotone There's two types of penguiners; keyboarders & mousers π It seems you're the former, whereas i'm the latter. So, fwiw, instead of using a kb shortcut like you, when i want to use #spectacle instead of either #flameshot or #ksnip, i left-click my Spectacle icon on my custom secondary Plasma launcher panel, which then launches S immediately in #RectangularArea capture mode [my most commonly-used one]. So, it seems like we both get there, from different directions, heehee.

@omartwotone Yes but #flameshot runs from #SystemTray, whereas annoyingly #spectacle still does not have this basic ability to minimise to ST. Better than both, coz not only for ST minimisation but also delightfully being tabbed [ie, multiple pics available simultaneously] is #ksnip. Works perfectly in #x11, sadly only partly in #wayland [no rectangular area].

@thelinuxEXP Did you know that #Flameshot let you blur, pixelate, and draw an opaque square on the sensitive part of screenshots? ππ
We believe we would have also pass the bar for your latest video π
For those Flameshot fans who have missed this very informative video (we highly recommend watching it), you can watch it on YouTube or odysee:
Something I didn't expect to really enjoy after swapping to #i3 from #KDE is that I now can have a terminal window open like this just because, well, it's neat to have. Now for instance, I used it to fetch notifications with #dunst so I could take a screenshot with #flameshot since something in my config is broken.
Learning curve might be somewhat steep, but it's still really enjoyable.
Really looking forward to getting down to ricing this one.
(dotfiles will be coming to github)

@IchoTolot that is what is so brilliant, the sheer choice in #Linux π I've installed #Flameshot now, can see that I'd use it for marking up photos quickly, rather than booting up dedicated editor
@IchoTolot for me, most times I only ever want to save the screenshot, I guess is YMMV. Will check out #flameshot, thank you!
I often annotate screenshots in my answers to student's questions. I've been using Gnome's default screenshot tool plus Inkscape. Tonight I discovered #flameshot Thank you @flameshot, this is going to save me so much time.

We are glad that you have find #Flameshot useful. Flameshot was originally written for Linux and X11, but we are trying to improve our compatibility and support for Wayland and other OSs. For the moment there have been some issues reported for multi-monitor setups especially on Gnome Wayland, but it is not reported by so many people. We would like to encourage you to search among the issues on our git repo and file a bug report if it is not reported already.

Hmm. Anyone knows why when I take a screenshot with #flameshot. The preview of it is not my current screen?
Like, it usually freezes whatever is in the screen and I can crop any section I want.
Lately the preview is of a previous moment in time, and it just wont change...
