Another update:
So, after spending days messing with cleaning, checking and formatting flash drives with no change, trying DVD installations, likewize the dreaded ERRNO 5 kept hitting the installation. I'd looked at my memory, partitioned the laptop HDD, absolutely every solved type fix I could find. Apart from install the distro with the WiFi turned off and hey, I now have a Linux mint laptop running very nicely thank you.

Any of you great people know anything about flashing ISOs to install Linux on an older HP laptop? Tried Rufus and Balena Etcher with absolutely no success. Balena keeps giving an error about turning a screen saver off and failing, rufus just kind of gives a million errors when booting from the flash drive.
