I installed it on my children's laptops (both 12yo) and configured the parental controls to deny them the _installation_ of applications. This results in many, many requests for my password on _updates_ of applications (we're talking #flatpak here). According to them, that's highly annoying. I agree. How can I set it up so updates work without additional authentication? 1/3

Since my replies are full of people missing the point (it's like a two-second meme is not nuanced!):

Of course I don't think #Flatpak, #Flathub, #FreeDesktop, etc. are evil. 😂

But we should be happy to use #SteamDeck as a way to get the cool stuff we're working on into the hands of millions of new folks. And we should be happy to use it as an example when talking to app developers we want to support #Linux.

Perhaps this is an alternative interpretation.

Do we have an implementation or even plan for apps on Linux to handle URL ownership? E.g. if I have a Flathub link and my app store has a Flathub remote, it would be neat to just pop me into the native app store. Or if I have a link out to matrix.to, it would be nice to just open it in my chat app directly.

I know we can do protocol-level stuff like apstream:// but I mean Android- and iOS-style link handling.

In fact, do other desktop platforms even do this?

I'll keep saying it, because it keeps coming up. If you're working in the FreeDesktop, Linux, or Flatpak spaces, you *need* to understand this, even if you don't personally care about gaming or Steam Deck.

Want to see #Electron apps on #Linux support autostart in a standard way like macOS and Windows, without developers having to write Linux-specific code?

We can make it happen! Linux uses Portals which abstract away the details and can be implemented in frameworks like Electron to be used the same way as on other platforms.

Any Electron app on Linux (like Discord, Bitwarden, Slack, etc.) would benefit from this work, whether running as a #Flatpak or not.

The #Flatpak is a community effort, automated from the official release. That feels a bit off for your password manager; thing that holds all your secrets.

A community post from 2021 asking them to maintain it only got 211 votes, 117 likes, and 46 comments but over 10k views. I and other #OpenSource folks commented and said we'd be happy to help, but never heard back.

Really liking #quarto even if only as a neat build system for @pandoc with nice integrations. Currently building a presentation in #RevealJS using @gmcd 's quarto-revealjs-clean presentation style in #VSCode in #Flatpak using #DevContainers (on @Podman_io 8-D) with a custom #pandoc filter by @odin for smart „German“ quote marks.

The result is dead simple to setup and code (thanks to #Markdown), any tool that can run dev-containers should pull in all build dependencies, and I simply vendored the presentation style & the filter. And I get beautiful output, a free speaker view.

If I hadn't said it before, I've gotten extremely comfortable with #Kubuntu. Everything just works, and being on Ubuntu's point releases keeps Plasma reasonably up to date. I use #Flatpak for most of my programs.

I even upgraded my PC, and my Kubuntu installed booted no problem on my newer CPU and motherboard.

To clarify: I absolutely see why #Flatpak would be desirable, particularly on things like Decks or other immutable/root-locked system where there's no other option, and it provides some method of portability I suppose?

But on a normal desktop, I don't see the need for apps permissions to be so aggressive out-of-the-box. Maybe for like, the one or two apps I don't trust but then like--I likely wouldn't want to use those apps in the first place if I don't trust them to begin with...

Et je ne suis pas un fan de #Snap et #flatpak. J'ai d'ailleurs retiré mon @LibreOffice de ces environnements pour le réinstallé en .deb. Et depuis il fonctionne bien et à une vitesse correcte.

A weird #linux quirk that I have been encountering more and more is the disappearance of window decorations on some #flatpak apps and their sudden reappearance. Also tiling those apps with Super + arrow keys crashes the app, and dragging the windows around is not possible. At least #slack and #vscodium are affected. It could be a #gnome issue as well.

What causes it is beyond my understanding, but maybe some of you good folks know what is going on! 😄
