I think I finally swatted that fly.

Nope.

Despite appearances, this photo wasn’t taken in a studio, but on a late afternoon walk with the sun low on the horizon and no flash at all: the sun was my flash, shining on from under my camera.

How cool. I never managed to identify these maggots from a microbial mat in Yellowstone National Park. By comparing with the larvae of alkaline flies in the video, I see they also have spiky prolegs–perhaps members of the same family, since most dipterans don't have them at all.

Digging a bit, I have this other adjacent observation of adult flies walking on those waters inaturalist.org/observations/2 labeled as Ephydridae ... they are likely related if not the same species.

More developments in making gene drives using CRISPR.

In order to combat Drosophila suzukii fruit destroying flies, NC State researchers have created a "homing" gene drive targeting the fly doublesex gene that, if inhibited, will result in sterility of the next generation.

Since the gene is so conserved, it could also be used as a target with other harmful insects.

Wow.
I always found chitin intriguing since I learned about it in school; that's what insect exoskeletons are made of. I would often drift away in dreams about me producing one on the fly, dashing off in this fab armour, slaying enemies and threats to the world.

As it turns out, dead soldier flies can be used for this chitin. To make biodegradable plastic.

Crowded pumpkin (?) flower 😊

Three bees and three fruit flies are working hard in this flower 😊

I think this is a male flower, but please correct me if I am wrong 🤔

Also, this can be a squash, or anything related. We did not plant this, it just popped out a couple months ago and now aggressively growing 😉
