The beach (mercurial) is mostly tiny stones right now, so, I did a tiny beach hunt.

See: yellow-ware, flow-blue, mid-1800’s transferprint earthenware, quartzite and chert debitage (scraps from tool making)

Here’s some I did last year. I considered a piece of glass, but decided something embroidered would be less prone to chipping during travel. Heh.
Anyway, this is the crystal dagger Ashitaka’s sister gives Ashitaka in ’s

Here’s a bone sewing needle I made a few weeks ago! The items on the right and above are preforms (aka the starting point before being shaped into the needle by flint).
I use this needle for leatherwork and basket weaving!

Why do archaeologists find hammerstones on sites? In many cases they were discarded when they became too battered to be effectively & accurately used (Photo: my old hammerstones).

Initially-struck (me) chert pebbles from the Citronelle formation in Louisiana. Tested pebbles like these are found at lithic procurement sites, where indigenous flintknappers in areas with only stream & hillside gravel deposits high-graded pebbles large enough to work, leaving those not deemed good enough to carry to a campsite/lithic reduction station.

It is interesting because novaculite is thought to be metamorphosed sandstone. Sandstone that underwent pressure & heat to be transformed into a unique chert-like rock. (Pictured is different color novaculite).

It looks like a cross between novaculite & quartzitic sandstone with a chert cortex. Very fragile. Debris went everywhere! I'm going to have to think about how to knap it...& use a bigger tarp. When I said it went everywhere, one whack with the small antler billet sent debris pinging off the carport wall & vehicles! Sheez...I don't think I've ever had a lithic material do that.
