The beach (mercurial) is mostly tiny stones right now, so, I did a tiny beach hunt.
See: yellow-ware, flow-blue, mid-1800’s transferprint earthenware, quartzite and chert debitage (scraps from tool making)

Here’s some #embroidery I did last year. I considered #flintknapping a piece of glass, but decided something embroidered would be less prone to chipping during travel. Heh.
Anyway, this is the crystal dagger Ashitaka’s sister gives Ashitaka in #studioghibli ’s #princessmononoke

Here’s a bone sewing needle I made a few weeks ago! The items on the right and above are preforms (aka the starting point before being shaped into the needle by flint).
I use this needle for leatherwork and basket weaving!

Thanks again to everyone who participated in the
Archaeological Society of Alberta
#FlintKnapping workshop and joined us at MRU. I can't wait till the next one!
Loads of collaboration and teaching going on. The #FlintKnapping experts were so willing to share their skills and help us learn.

Modern reproduction of a Clovis point (ca. 13,500-12,750 calibrated Before Present [1950]) on green glass. #Archaeology #flintknapping
Why do archaeologists find hammerstones on sites? In many cases they were discarded when they became too battered to be effectively & accurately used (Photo: my old hammerstones). #Flintknapping #archaeology
Modern struck off leopard obsidian (names may vary) with older, slightly weathered surface in one location. #flintknapping #archaeology
Initially-struck (me) chert pebbles from the Citronelle formation in Louisiana. Tested pebbles like these are found at lithic procurement sites, where indigenous flintknappers in areas with only stream & hillside gravel deposits high-graded pebbles large enough to work, leaving those not deemed good enough to carry to a campsite/lithic reduction station. #archaeology #flintknapping
Hurry! Hurry! Get your post-apocalypse edged stone weapons before it's too late!
Why wait until the end, stock up now!
Makes great stocking-stuffers! (Note, wrap in material to prevent accidental cuts & dismemberment)

It is interesting because novaculite is thought to be metamorphosed sandstone. Sandstone that underwent pressure & heat to be transformed into a unique chert-like rock. (Pictured is different color novaculite). #archaeology #geology #flintknapping
#flintknapping #geology #archaeology
It looks like a cross between novaculite & quartzitic sandstone with a chert cortex. Very fragile. Debris went everywhere! I'm going to have to think about how to knap it...& use a bigger tarp. When I said it went everywhere, one whack with the small antler billet sent debris pinging off the carport wall & vehicles! Sheez...I don't think I've ever had a lithic material do that. #archaeology #flintknapping #geology
