From today's canoe trip through the inundated forests of the Caeté river floodplain -- this liana is actually a gymnosperm (should be Gnetum venosum Spruce ex Benth.). We collected this specimen for our herbarium at the University of Pará (UFPA) in Bragança (HBRA).

“Water movement and storage
The second way beavers affect their watersheds is by changing the movement and storage of water from melted snow and rain. This is because beaver dams cause water to flow slower both before and after the dam. Also, beaver canals in the floodplains above the dam slow the water flow. When water flows slower, rainwater or water from melted snow has the chance to spread in the channels across the #floodplain and be absorbed and stored by the soil. Also, with slower water flows, the length of the path water takes to sink into the #sediment and return to the stream becomes longer.
The advantage of slower flows and increased absorption is that #groundwater supplies are replenished more quickly and more water is stored. This helps the #watershed and wetlands to survive during times of little or no #rainfall.”

Driven to the #floodplain by #CivicIndifference and a misplaced belief that the usually dry river posed no threat, the Salinas’s river-bottom dwellers suffered more than anyone else.

“The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been authorized to develop a more modern #rainfall atlas, as well as one that takes #climate change into account, but that work won’t be done in time for current [bipartisan infrastructure law] projects. “There’s a timing disconnect for sure,” said Chad Berginnis, executive director of the Association of State #Floodplain Managers. “No doubt this #infrastructure is not going to have as much benefit because it’s authorized at the same time as this #NOAA update. But I’m not going to let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” Better to build something, in other words.”

In my research on #wetlands, I’ve been to some spectacular, internationally important places. Canoed the turquoise waters of the Columbia #floodplain Wetlands, hiked to #peatlands nestled in mountain valleys of the upper Bow River clamboured over dunes to #swales in the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve.
