The leading edges of basalt flows can #travel as #fast as 10 km/h (6 mph) on steep slopes but they typically advance less than 1 km/h (0.27 m/s or about 1 ft/s) on gentle slopes.
But when basalt lava flows are confined within a channel or lava tube on a steep slope, the main body of the flow can reach velocities >30 km/h (19 mph).

It has produced large, voluminous #flows of basalt that have reached the ocean 8 times since 1868.
It last erupted in 1984, when a lava flow came within 7.2 km (4.5 mi) of #Hilo, the largest population center on the island.
