Today in 1969, an FLQ bomb explodes at the Montreal Stock Exchange, 40 minutes before the end of trading.
While no one is killed, 27 people are injured.
The blast destroys the trading floor, visitor gallery & northeast wall. In all, it causes $1 million worth of damages.

@owlyph The oath of loyalty to the king is like the oath American politicians take to the Constitution: the point is that the person assuming office commits to respect and work within existing laws and institutions. In the US, that means essentially the constitutional order, but in Canada that is personified by the #Crown .
That is to say, a #PQ deputy should be able to take the oath of loyalty in good conscience, but an #FLQ-supporter would be committing perjury.
"However, he said his one regret as leader of the Opposition was giving Pierre Trudeau the benefit of the doubt over the invocation of the War Measures Act. Stanfield later admitted he wished he had dissented, instead of supporting a policy he said encouraged âconfrontation, escalation and disillusionment.â âI think things could have been quieted down with less drastic measures,â he told Macleanâs in 1972."

"Like many people in the province however, with time, I came to realize how traumatic those events were not only for Mr. Laporte, Mr. Cross and their families, but also for the 497 Quebecers arrested in the middle of the night, and then arbitrarily detained for days or weeks. Often based on the flimsiest of evidence, they were suspected of belonging to the FLQ, declared an illegal organization under the Act."

~ https://www.journaldequebec.com/2020/09/13/les-rose--cie-complices-malgre-eux-de-trudeau
