If the birds rely on the food then stressing wildlife can sometimes increase the risk, i think this has been observed with #Hendravirus in #Flyingfoxes

The most important thing to get out of your garden is any domestic birds, it might be good to convert any breakfast layers into a Sunday roast. (Obviously only if you have the skill and facilities to do that safely and humanely, I'm half joking, contact an expert of some sort for advice.)

A few days ago, we went for a walk along the Merri Creek in Clifton Hill near sunset. Perfect timing for viewing a great number of bats. Here's a sequence of photos toward Melbourne that show how quickly the sky changed over just eight minutes.

@infinite8horizon @thecrobe Come to American Samoa and you can see #FruitBats throughout the day in broad daylight, sleeping in groups and flying. They seem to fly fast enough. Hurrah some rain! This holiday so far has been intensely hot. Heading back to NZ tomorrow. Really going to miss the 4pm flight of massive bats/flying foxes, the doing nothing and it being the main achievement of the day, and not having any chores. Is there anything better about a holiday than NO CHORES?!

I spent yesterday evening watching the flying foxes at Yarra Bend as the sun set. They're among the largest members of the bat family and are super active at this spot along the Yarra River.

They occasionally skim the top of the river, mid flight, to cool down and get little drinks of water, then hang upside down in the gum trees along the riverbank. An incredible sight.

This always was and always will be Wurundjeri country. :firstnations:
