Yes, I want to #flyless but reaching northern Ireland from northern Germany ( #EAA2023 ; #EAABelfast) is quite some hassle even when flying today (at least I go to the airport with only public transport). 😒 In the Late #pleistocene the connection would probably have been better at least to the shores of the Irish Sea. 😁

Just discovered this super cool initiative for the ETAPS ‘23 conference: extended stay scheme to encourage conference attendees to travel by train instead of plane. The idea is to combine attendance and lab research visits to better amortize the travel time to make train more air-competitive. This is great win-win thinking!

Now on the final bus to Tallinn. The 4 hour wait in #Warsaw was enough to briefly enjoy the famous local #vegan scene.

I was too late for local anarco-vegan coop https://lokalveganbistro.pl so I went for https://lavegana4.business.site. I wasn't disappointed! Surprising pumkpin soup and seitan rice with mushrooms, herbs and everything.

To #StayGrounded and #FlyLess it helps to pamper yourself a bit along the way. (This tourist-oriented place is luxurious by local standards at max 8 € per main course.)

So far I've managed to #FlyLess and #StayGrounded in my travels from Helsinki to #Bruxelles https://mamot.fr/@nemobis/109789425262361822 , but it's a privilege to be able to take 2-3 days for the travel (not to mention the time for route planning and the extra costs of going by train or ferry).

To reduce costs and pain it can help to do some train pooling, so ferry and train berths cabins can be shared. I'm always looking for fellow train travellers to such conferences.
