@plantarum @Edrmorris is the best I have used. Retouching works well, even if some of the frames are misaligned (because of wind).

My setup is a tripod and a rail slider with 1 mm thread pitch (which gives the possibility of abt 16 steps per mm when needed). For 1:1 ratio usually 4 steps are enough. My favorite one is the below geranium.

For in-camera stacking (with Nikon D750) I was using qDslrDashboard app, which works quite well.

@Edrmorris you can't beat the Olympus TG6 for - this was done hand-held, and the stacking done automatically in-camera while we were in the field, so extra gear or software!

I'm having fun with the option of . So far I can tell that if the closest object is at a quasi-macro distance it's better to increase the number of focusing points and frames; also, forget about moving subjects, they always come out blurred (animals, wind). I'm still practicing, but first results are encouraging. 😀
