There are many plants thought of protective in Scottish folklore, and Holly(cuileann in Gaelic) is one of them.

Opposite St James' church in Chilton Cantelo (Somerset) is a farm that remains associated with a screaming skull, supposedly the skull of Theophilus Broome.

Broome died in 1670. His body lies in a tomb within St James's Church, but his skull, as he instructed, remains in the farmhouse. As in other screaming skull legends, any attempts to bury it have resulted in endless shrieking and poltergeist activity. The skull can now only be seen by written appointment.

The Volcano, The Elf Rock, And The Rainbow

Eyjafjallajökull, Pétursey, and the view from Dyrhólaey in southern .

It is said that good elves live on one side of Pétursey and, on the other side, bad elves live. It's also rumoured that an infamous troll called Gilitrutt has lived in that volcano for centuries.

In , chochin obake (lantern ghost) is a paper or silk lantern that has transformed into a after many years of service. It has one or two eyes and a long tongue protruding from a split in the lantern that forms a mouth. Like other tsukumogami, it is believed that after 100 years of service (which may just mean a very long time) objects can develop supernatural powers and gain their own spirit. Chochin obake...

A good bit of Texas folklore concerns so-called "mystery lights" and the stories that have grown up around them.

In Saratoga, TX, some say a ghost with a lantern is searching for his lost head.

"According to local legend, the light on Bragg Road is the ghostly lantern of an unfortunate railroad employee. Decapitated in a wreck, his spirit now walks the road nightly, eternally searching for his head."

More Texas folklore for : "The Crying Mermaid of Salado"

This story concerns a young woman who is magically granted the man of her dreams. Of course, there is a catch.

"The story of Sirena the Tonkawa maiden has been passed down through generations in the town of Salado. Every year there is a festival and parade dedicated to the Crying Mermaid, and one can pay homage to her story at the bronze statue in Salado Creek."

Little for you. In the Dane Hills, Leicestershire, there lies a cave belonging to an ogress witch that terrorised the area. This blue faced was renowned for eating disobedient children who stayed too close to her den.

Another from my and Kirsty Logan's zine full of folklore reimaginings from the British Isles. Might make a good stocking filler!

A little for you. A piece inspired by the very haunted Pengersick Castle in Cornwall which features in my and Kirsty Logan's zine.

The castles long history has seen many supernatural events.

From mermaids, serpent ladies, ghosts, and sightings of demonic black dogs, the castle has a rich and varied paranormal reputation.

The White Lady of Sanquhar Castle was a golden-haired girl who appeared on moonlit nights. She is believed to be Marion McMath of Dalpeddar, who disappeared in 1590, possibly murdered by the Lord of Sanquhar. In 1875, workmen digging a pit in the grounds found a pair of 16th-century shoes, a broken silver chain, and the skeleton of a young woman lying head down, with tresses of long, golden hair still sticking to her skull.
The White Lady was last seen in 1974.
