Rewatched Ever After, one of my favourite movies of all time, today and I'm thinking, as I often do, about the film's closing narration.
The woman telling the story to the brothers Grimm says that the truth of the story faded over time into fairytale, and though the prince and princess did live happily ever after, "the point, gentlemen, is that they lived."
To me, what this speaks to is the reality at the heart of fairytales. The stories are fanciful and imaginative, but they come from real experiences, real people, real histories.
It's a particularly special joy to find the reality between the lines of the story. Maybe there was never a Danielle de Barbarac or a Prince Henry, but for someone, somewhere, there was a love like theirs, for real people somewhere in time. And they told this story that they saw themselves in, and their kids told it to their kids, and somewhere along the line, the rest of us got Cinderella.
Anyway I'm crying again so I gotta go!!! My point is love and magic are real, and fairytales and folklore are the evidence.

In parts of Transylvania it used to be a habit to chew pine resin (as if it was chewing gum). People did it for fun, or to clean their teeth, or to gather saliva for spinning thread.
Apparently, young men gifted pre-chewed resin to the girls they fancied. If the girl accepted the gift, it meant she liked the guy.

The Porter and the Thieves
Folktale from Iraq.
A poor porter is kicked out of home by his abusive wife. He joins a band of thieves to make a living... But every time they go to rob a house the soft-hearted porter feels sorry for the victims, and accidentally wakes them up. (e.g. tries to tuck them in because they sleep without a blanket.)
In the end, his unwitting kindness leads him into a situation that gives him wealth.
