"Thus we see that the tale creates a time and space set apart from the rest of life in which events and transformations, because they have no equivalent in experience, can be understood only by the imagination and not by rational thought. The narrative attitude appropriate to folktales must somehow present the possibility of magical transformation as ...an ordinary event, yet still allow the narrator to remain skeptical. "

📢#OutNow in #OA: '#Folktales of #Mayotte, an #African Island' by Lee Haring, foreword by Mark Turin.
The book uncovers the versatility and literary skills of #oralnarrators in a small #African island. Relying on the researches of three #French #ethnographers who interviewed #storytellers in the 1970s-80s, Lee Haring shows a once-#colonised people using #verbal #art to preserve ancient values in the #postcolonial world, when the island of #Mayotte was transforming itself from a neglected #colony to an overseas department of #France.
The author’s innovation is to read #ethnographic researches as #play scripts—to see printed folktales as accounts of live #performances.
#Literary specialists, #folklore enthusiasts, and people who like #reading stories will find much to appreciate in this engaging and sophisticated book.

3/x The #Iroko tree is rich in meaning: Edo people believed Azen (witches) had their lairs in Iroko trees, one reason for not venturing into forests alone. There are also many #Yoruba stories about Iroko trees, for example "Olunronbi and the Iroko Tree" #Folktales #Mythology #Nigeria

Reading a Romanian version of Mother Holle. Instead of cleaning the house and shaking the pillows, in this one the girl has to feed Holy Mother Friday's pets: frogs, toads, snakes, ferrets and dragons.
Hands up if you'd rather feed goth pets than clean the house 😄

It's #FathersDay so I wrote a blog post about adoptive fathers in folktales and legends.
Because caring adoptive dads also need good representation in stories 😊

You know the folktale about the king who has donkey ears? He tries to hide them, but his barber finds out and the gossip spreads. (Most well known with King Midas)
I just read a Hungarian version with a queen who has duck feet. A shoemaker spies them - but instead of spreading gossip, he makes her shoes that fit, and gets richly rewarded.
😄🩰

I was just reading a Hungarian legend about a hero who has to duel his enemy in the dark. He puts fresh oak leaves on his hat, and dry oak leaves on the other man's hat, and then defeats him by following the sound of dry leaves whispering.
I feel like there is something very mythical about this. 🌳

It just so happened that there was a ginkgo tree over the #storytelling stage at Book Week today 😄 😊
So I got to tell The Ginkgo Fairy, which is one of my favorite stories from the new Urban Folktales book.
It's a Chinese tale about a ginkgo tree that turns into a girl and falls in love with a mortal man. She ends up saving him from an evil serpent.
Even in big cities, folktales are all around us 😊

It turns out that it’s pretty hard to figure out how old folktales are using simple historical data. Since the tales were passed down orally, they can be almost impossible to unwind using a historian's or anthropologist’s traditional toolbox. So the team borrowed from biology instead, using a technique called phylogenetic analysis #folktales #folklore

Also, from now on I'm going to explain the folktale type index with the help of Spiderverse.
There are endless variants of the same story, all unique and recognizable, but they have core canon points that remain the same everywhere.
Most of the time. But even if you change some canon points, the story can still be recognized.
(I am anticipating that point to be made in the third movie...)

I didn't even know it was #ButterflyAwarenessDay, and yet I was telling butterfly folktales at an online #storytelling session 😄 🦋 🦋 🦋
I love it when things just align like that!
I told the story of the Thieving Butterflies from the Cook Islands, where butterflies use their mimicry to steal back a swordfish stolen from a deity by an eight-headed lizard.

Just finished my "Spin the globe" #storytelling program at the library 😊 All the spins were successful! I told stories from Nicaragua, mainland USA, Hawaii, Guinea, and Mexico. The kids were having a field day spinning the globe and commenting on the stories. And they loved the tiny notebook I used to check the list of countries and tales 😄
Three of the tales I told were new to me too, and I am happy I got the chance to tell them in public!

Remember, in the folktale tradition of your own culture you *are* the folk. No one can stop you from telling queer folktales 😉

I'm gonna say this about this globe-spinning #storytelling program: every time I have a gig, it feels like cramming for a Geography exam the day before 😅
Do I have all 206 folktales ready for this?...
