But the returns on wool have stagnated for decades while focus shifted to #milk (via #Fonterra), with (arguably) mediocre per unit profitability increases and (unarguably) huge negative impact on the quality of NZs water

And yet, NZs focus remains firmly on dairy

"Big Dairy produces around 90% of New Zealand’s superheating methane gas from too many cows. Fonterra’s methane contribution makes New Zealand, per capita, the 6th worst climate polluter in the OECD.

In times of the climate and biodiversity crisis we need bold climate action. The Government can and should revoke Big Dairy’s licence to pollute. It can do this by phasing out synthetic nitrogen fertiliser which drives the huge dairy herd and causes pollution in its own right."

#Fonterra is New Zealand’s biggest #climate polluter. #Dairy #cattle produce a quarter of the country’s climate warming greenhouse gas emissions, and most of this is ... #methane. Fonterra alone produced almost a fifth of New Zealand’s total greenhouse gas emissions last year.

We call methane ‘superheating’ because it’s an intense climate #pollutant ... . Just one tonne ... has the same impact on climate change as 265 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

For two years running, Fonterra has been named NZ's worst contributor to the climate change which drove the #AucklandFloods ... and in that time, made over $1 billion profit.

Big Dairy is creaming it while we pay the price.
