Did you know that on St Peter’s Day (29 June) in Herefordshire it was believed that rain needed to fall on the orchards to ensure a bountiful apple harvest?

If you are looking for food ideas for a solstice celebration consider foods that reflect the nature of the day such as red & orange fruits which represent the fiery nature of the sun, green herbs to banish negativity & attract prosperity, delicious cheese (particularly round ones) for joy & health. If you want to attract a soupçon of passion then add some spices/chilli & maybe a touch of honey in the form of mead to attract money, love & blessings to your home.

My newest letter ‘From Figgy Sunday to Passion Pudding’ is all about Good Friday food folklore, herb lore and folklore based gardening advice. I think you might enjoy it. There is less about hot cross buns than you probably imagine & definitely has less popularly known facts you could use to astonish friends at a social gathering (Also it’s completely free & you don’t have to subscribe to read it, although obviously I’d love that)

It was apparently once a custom on Good Friday for good friends to hold a hot cross bun together and recite

‘Half for you, half for me
Between us two good luck shall be’

and then break the bun in two. This was said to cement the friendship for another year. It does seem dreadfully impractical though as surely both parties would get butter all over themselves?

Did you know that this is the first of the Borrowed Days? Did you celebrate on Carlin Sunday? Would you like to know what I’m talking about? I share all this in my free newsletter along with side chat about Gray Pays, Liber Cure Cocorum, an interesting, if ineffective vintage remedy for strain and Poor Knights of Windsor.

One possible alternative to bay leaves for prophesying a Valentines Day sweetheart in your dreams, according to a letter from 1755, was to boil an egg, remove the yolk, fill it with salt. You then take it to bed, eat the whole thing including the shell and then sleep without talking, drinking or eating. Sleeping with wedding cake under your pillow does seem more satisfying now.

In the early 18th Century, Women in rural England would pin bay leaves to the corners plus one further one in the centre of their pillows on the night before Valentines in order to dream of their future lovers. In some areas, they would instead sprinkle the bay leaves with rose water & strew them across their pillow before wearing their nightgown inside out in order to achieve the same effect.

In Norfolk there was a tradition on Valentine’s Eve of gifts being exchanged between lovers and sweets/chocolate being left for children. The giver of the gifts to children was known as Jack Valentine or slightly more creepily Snatch Valentine. This second name meant the gift would have string attached which would be pulled every time the child tried to grab the present until the third time when they would be allowed to keep it.

This is a very UK based question but would anyone mind sharing what they consider normal food to be served after a funeral or wake? As an example, every one I have attended has triangle cut sandwiches, filling immaterial & tiny sausage rolls. I know this is an odd question but I’m trying to work out if my experience is based on my family or is similar by geography. (this is for research, I’m not currently planning a funeral!) Thank you in advance for your time.
