Got beans?

File this under gardening lessons learned.

We had an early warm spring and so I took advantage by planting the pole bean crop earlier than normal. We had a great harvest, froze 10 quarts and shared with friends and local food bank.

But now the plants are almost done producing. Usually we have fresh beans later than this. Next year I plan to plant half the crop ASAP and then wait 2-3 weeks before planting the rest.

I really should remember to use a larger container when I do the daily pole bean harvest. Tomorrow the local food bank will get another delivery of various fresh top quality organic vegies. And of course a good supply of these will get tucked away in our chest freezer.

jailbreak!

No, the blueberries did not tunnel out. Instead, the dang Juncos tunneled in under the wire!

Juncos are ground birds and the scratch with their feet foraging for food. A couple of days ago I let a Junco out of the jail and carefully inspected for holes in the net and tunnels. This morning there was a Junco (same one?) in the jail and, yup, a new bird tunnel.

I have now armored the ground outside the wire.

I was out picking pole beans this evening and thought I should check on the pepper plants in our mini greenhouse. Whoa - that is easily the largest green paper I have grown. And we have always gardened organically. BTW, when I buy gloves I get the extra large size.

It was my turn to cook tonight and I was doing chef’s salad. One ingredient I wanted to have was some chopped green pepper. I had previously used the last part of one we had in the fridge in a breakfast dish so I went out to our mini greenhouse to see what I could find.

Actually I picked to first green pepper of the season about 10 days ago.

Easy picking in the patch today. Just cup your hands under a clump and gently roll them free with your thumbs.

tip. 30% strength vinegar is a dandy weed killer. Home Depot used to sell it in gallon jugs - not sure if they still do. Last time we ordered a 4-pack online.

Use it full strength. We spot spray using a “chemical resistant” spray bottle. If you use it on weeds in your lawn it will also kill the grass but the grass will grow back. Works fast and just a bit of spray will zap a weed.

Harvested the first potatoes of the season yesterday and had a flashback to being a kid visiting grandfather Max on his Minnesota farm and helping him get potatoes from his garden. Max laid them out in the grass by the house and washed them off with a hose.

Our has a jail. So far, no blueberries have escaped.

The 9 metal ‘T’ posts are permanent. PVC ‘risers’ are glued together. Horizontal pipes at the top slip into fittings and blue twine holds things together. Around the bottom is chew-proof plastic fencing. The far wall is a separate piece and folds back at one corner for a door.

I froze 12 quarts last year and also had plenty to share with neighbors and friends.

Does anyone in the southern US or a similar climate grow oyster mushrooms? I bought some at a farmers market the other day from a guy who grows them in a greenhouse. They're delicious but expensive. I would like to try growing some, am going to research it.

Our includes a low cost DIY miniature greenhouse. The key part of this design is using concrete reinforcing wire (‘remesh’) to hold up the plastic roof. Concrete supply shops sell it by the running foot. We also used UV resistant plastic.

We overwinter spinach, Walla Walla onions and hardy lettuce varieties. Carrots I planted early this year are ready and it will produce our first tomatoes and peppers.

Garden sunrise.

We have the good fortune of being able to grow a great deal of the food that we eat. I used to have a cap that said “Farmers Eat First”.

So far this year we have harvested lots of early spinach and lettuce. The first ripe strawberries have been picked and the next time we need an onion we can grab the first Walla Walla sweet onion. Later this month the earliest potatoes will show up in a meal.
