@ddmgmgh @toussaint Random observation of absurd capitalist inefficiency and waste:
In my local shop in country NSW, the cheapest cheese is imported from the Netherlands, which, last time I checked, was in Europe. Now, I'm not an expert on dairy, but I'm reasonably confident that we have cows in #Australia, and we have something like 25m humans on the entire frikkin continent.
So, in what f*cked up ecocidal capitalist dystopia, is curdled milk shipped from the other side of the Earth cheaper than the stuff from up the road?

I really like this article about people growing the 'exotic' veg they crave to help reduce the environmental impact of eating what they want. That's the same reason we grow baby corn in our garden - not exotic, perhaps, but better than importing it from thousands of miles away.

This is FANTASTIC.
I'm a deep believer in creating small, self-sufficient and sustaining communities, especially where #food is concerned.

This leadership from #NewYorkCity is something to be admired.
Giving the local #community more #ownership and #sovereignty over the means of #production has so many fabulous benefits:
- Benefits #ClimateAction / #ClimateChange by reducing #FoodMiles
- Benefits local #people by reconnecting them with the food on their plates
- Supports the #Local #Economy by keeping wealth & spending in the local area for the benefit of local #business
#Bristol (where I live now) is a city of #UrbanFarms and #allotments. It's staggering, actually, how much production capacity there is here. And I'm proud of it.
However, we must also be attentive to the #equality and #equity issues. #LocalSourcing can come with a price premium (local carrots here can cost 4x supermarket versions from the other side of #Europe).
Local production must come with local affordability too. That's a redline for me...

Are you even worse at #maths than I am?
Besides, after reading all the small print, I think it's better to give up on this #chocolate. It's done too much travelling. "Made in Italy. Packed in Poland. Non-EU Agriculture".

My main gripe is that the issue of our broken food system has never been binary – it’s not as simple as meat bad, plants good

I know people dislike #Reddit for many legit reasons. But #scicomm can work over there in the right places.
It was this post on #FoodMiles apparently. https://redd.it/vgqfm2

Eating #LocalFood is not a good way to reduce the #carbon footprint of your #diet. What you eat matters much more. Local #beef emits more than soy shipped from far away. #PlantBased foods usually have a lower #footprint than animal produce: https://hannahritchie.substack.com/p/food-miles #foodmiles

Very excited by the contents of my vegetable box today: mini squashes, spring greens, parsnips, leeks and cauliflower. What's not to like?

In trying to reduce the impact of our diets, we tend massively to over-emphasise #FoodMiles, and under-emphasise the type of food we eat. Even if you shipped bananas 6 times round the planet, their impact would be lower than local beef and lamb. https://ourworldindata.org/food-choice-vs-eating-local

Best #broccoli and #bean year we've had in our little #vegiePatch. Other vegies are not #growing fast, though.
We'd share photos of a critter we found on our #parsley but unfortunately, over #Tor #Privacy #VPN, the #mastodon #imageServer(?) won't allow us.
The broccoli look so tasty - can't wait to try/eat them!
