One thing the #foodshortage has thrown up, and that has to change, is peoples requirements to be able to buy anything at anytime.

Making a habit of eating fresh food that needs to be shipped half way across the planet isn’t good.

We need to go back to eating what is seasonally produced closer to home.

If the reporting is accurate that the #FoodShortage here is down to poor harvests in Spain and Morocco and not #brexit, then this is our wake up call that more needs to be done to reverse our effects on the #climate and #ClimateChange

The shortages in the UK of fruit & veg from Alicante/Murcia is also affected by Brexit.

With a general shortage, the lorries are reluctant to go to UK if produce is in great demand in France, Germany etc. This will continue into the future, as production is reckoned to be reduced by 50% due to the cutting of the Tajo-Segura pipeline.

This should have been foreseen: I was predicting it in Geography lessons here before I retired 5 years ago.

This has been widely reported in the Spanish press and the south-eastern regional news for more than a year, but nothing has been flagged up in the UK.

The huge loss of agricultural water has caused demonstrations by growers but Madrid government is adamant that the water pipeline will be cut off: there simply isn't enough water in Castilla for them to carry on supplying fruit & veg growers in the south-east.

Shortages in UK supermarkets - reported widely today -are a taste of the future.

As reported in UK news, yes, Alicante and Murcia - regions that produce fresh fruit and vegetables for UK consumers - have suffered from a cold spell. But this is not the end of the story.

The cutting of the Tajo-Segura water pipeline (trasvase) means the long-term loss of production of fruit and vegetables is permanent. This has received no UK news coverage.
