Article highlighting a new paper in #GreatLakes Research on links between #algalblooms and #hypoxia. Low oxygen in the Central Basin is an important impairment to the #LakeErie ecosystem that will be a focus of the 🇨🇦🇺🇸 Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI next year. We are in the midst planning many projects to target #geochemistry, #nutrients, #foodwebs and habitat use during the 2024 fieldyear.

Does species richness ensure #resilience? Karatayev et al. show that it does not: Alternative consumer- or resource-dominated states can arise in #foodWebs with low trait #diversity or high functional redundancy. Thus diversity only limits the #feedbacks that can produce #alternativeStableStates.

Always nice to see the crew return safely to the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington from the monthly #Toronto #StCatharines #LakeOntario sampling done for the 2023 🇨🇦🇺🇸 Collaborative Science and Monitoring Initiative #CSMI. 6 stations, 140 km! Long day and a little rough on the lake, but our biologists and #uwaterloo coop students toughed it out. We collected #plankton to study lower #foodwebs and water for chemistry and to measure algae and bacteria growth rates. #GreatLakes

Time for updated #introduction with the new influx of users from dysfunctional Twitter.
I'm a #GreatLakes Research Scientist working for Fisheries and Oceans #Canada (#DFO) based out of the Canada Centre for Inland Waters in Burlington. My group is responsible for lower trophic #FoodWebs (microbes, phytoplankton, #zooplankton and diets of forage #fishes). This supports recreational & commercial fisheries and ecosystem health in the lakes.

From the article “.. Species like the stag beetle, whose larvae feed directly on dead wood and are thus at the bottom of the food chain, benefit in their diversity from the amount of energy stored in the wood," says Peter Kriegel: "The more sugar compounds are stored in the heartwood, the greater their diversity.
At the top end of the food pyramid of deadwood beetles are species like the ant beetle, which eat other insects. Their diversity is largely unaffected by the energy stored in the wood. Instead, greater solar radiation plays an important role here…”

With invention of the microscope in the 1600s, one of the first #zooplankton species described were #rotifers by John Harris and Antonie van Leuwenhoek. Named "wheeled animalcules" because of their distinctive ciliated corona used for feeding. Ubiquitous in most #freshwater systems. Some can be dried out and revived, and though they are dioecious, many are parthenogenic (female clones). Very important to aquatic #FoodWebs.

While most are familiar with green and productive tropical land, many don't know it can be opposite in the #ocean, with fertile polar regions. When sunlight returns to the poles, oceans bloom with #phytoplankton, which many large (almost a cm long!) #copepods in the Calanus genus and krill (euphausids to be fancy) take advantage of. Baleen #whales 🐋, commercially important fish and shrimp come to feed on these short, efficient #FoodWebs.

The #DFO #ECCC #CSMI 🇨🇦🇺🇸 #LakeOntario cruise is moving along nicely on the CCGS #Limnos. The stations off Oswego, NY take a little longer because these are the deepwater stations for Lake Ontario with max depth of 244 meters (802 feet). These are stations where we will most likely catch Mysis diluviana, an important #FoodWebs #zooplankton. We should be done the US waters stations by end of today and move to the north shore to complete the survey. #CooperativeScience #Plankton #Chemistry

Many cladoceran #zooplankton, especially from the genus #Daphnia undergo a process known as cyclomorphosis in the presence of predator kairomones. This is typified by enlarged "helmet" formation and extended spines. Presence of vertebrate predators (or even water which had fish in it) or inverts such Chaoborus (midge larvae) can generate this rather spectacular transformation. #FoodWebs

"When considering food web properties, however, #wolves (Canis lupus) and #cougars (Felis concolor) served as better umbrellas that also captured food web properties such as connectance, links and nestedness that better reflect ecological interactions. Never done a proper #introduction since opening my #Mastodon account in early October so here we go
I'm an ecologist based in Berlin and I currently work on #lightpollution & its effects on #insects. I have also worked on a range of other topics in #ecology like #foodwebs & #invasivespecies
I'm also an editorial board member at the journal Oikos & a working group speaker for science communication at the Leibniz Postdoc Network
Looking forward to expand my #Mastodon community in 2023

@hinchliffe_eco a very nice study. It highlights why an ecosystem and #FoodWebs approach to larval fish recruitment is so important. Focusing on a single factor often gives results which are conflicting but well explained by other factors.
This is a really nice article about the #global decline of #insects. Gives a nice background on #diversity, #EcosystemServices, #GlobalChange and the importance of insects in #FoodWebs. Hats off to the authors for making this complex, underreported issue easy to digest for a wide audience. My only note is the lack of italics on latin binomials! https://www.reuters.com/graphics/GLOBAL-ENVIRONMENT/INSECT-APOCALYPSE/egpbykdxjvq/
