Why is it so ingrained in NZ and AUS sports culture to nickname their teams?

I’ll stick with the joy if I may.
What is it about womens sport - there’s just more obvious joy and fun, for the players and the crowds.
And the old chestnut that ppl don’t watch women’s sport…that’s changing before our very eyes.
The skill level and pace in last night’s world opener was exceptional. The Ferns were incredible on the ball.

115 followers · 621 posts · Server mastodon.nzi've not watched much football. a game that lasts 90min and the most common score is 1-1 seems like a yawn. which is rank hypocrisy given my fave sport - test cricket - usually lasts *five days* and often still ends in a draw. 🙃 but at least wickets are taken and a few hundred runs scored! 🏏
anyway, i watched the entire 100min of #NZLvNOR and loved it! the players' skills, the energy, the tension, the crowd, and that historic result! great stuff and huge congrats, #FootballFerns!! 🤩
