Enjoyed the latest session of the Limits to Openness reading group, organised by Eva Weinmayr and Femke Snelting. Yesterday we read Katherine McKittrick's 'Footnotes (Books and Papers Scattered about the Floor)' from her book Dear Science and Other Stories (Duke University Press, 2021).

Sad to say it was the first time I'd read 'Footnotes' by @demonicground, although others in the group seemed familiar with it. I've clearly being missing out. A favourite passage?:

'I believe that bibliographies and endnotes and references and sources are alternative stories that can, in the most generous sense, centralize the practice of sharing ideas about liberation and resistance and writing against racial and sexual violence. Alternative outcomes.'

Still, I'm glad that a source exist. And I'd have much preferred if the previous historian I intended to cite had done the job...

Digging into some historians' footnotes is sometimes incredibly frustrating, especially when you try to write your own scholarship by building on them. The game I hate most is "pass the bucket": a claim that refers to another historian's whose claim is also passed down. Until you find the original claimant, who cited no source nor evidence for it. Grrrr! 😡

So publishers preferred #endnotes because they were cheaper. This ceased to be true about 2002, when InDesign 2.0 (and soon after Quark XPress) became able to handle footnotes as easily as Word had been doing all along. So now there’s no excuse for endnotes except “We've always done it that way.” Always!

Fidus Writer 3.11.11 is not a major release, but it brings one of the most requested features is finally here: the ability to export comments (and their responses) to DOCX and ODT files! 🎉

Comments are exported directly to ODT files, and also in most cases also to DOCX files. However, the DOCX format doesn't allow comments on text inside of footnotes. So those comments have been moved to the footnote reference. 👀

Authors, if your footnotes are regularly three times as long as the text on the page, you have restructuring to do.

Full citations and thorough footnotes: YES!
Mini essays in the footnote area that completely disrupt the flow of reading: NO!

From a typesetting POV it's a freaking nightmare too.

If you have that much fabulous footnote material it should either be incorporated into the text itself, or moved to an appendix.
