Environmental intervention requires continuous monitoring.

Below linked the example of past efforts with a foreign tree species in , where the new plant spread uncontrolledly with detrimental effect on local communities

Many thanks to @dw@newsbots.eu for writing this piece.

What do you have to bear in mind when considering supporting a project?

1. Don't support mono-cultures
This is very important. are not helpful in regenerating the soil, attracting water, increasing biodiversity and they are not as effective ecosystems at sucking out of the air as mixed forests.

2. Support long-term projects
If a project plants trees and then cuts them down after they have grown to full size that is not helping anything. Make sure the project commits to protecting and fostering the forest for a long time.

3. Make sure indigenous people are included.
Conservation areas protect nature from any human influence, which includes indigenous people. But practice has shown, that forestation projects are more efficient if indigenous people are included, their knowledge is used and they can use and care for the land. Also it's only just to support indigenous people. .

4. Support respected projects.
Make sure the project you want to support is not all talk, but can also provide proof that they actually do what they say.
Check what certificates they have, if they won any sustainability awards and what newspaper articles write about them.

- the search engine that plants trees

ecosia.org/

Ecosia is a search engine that donates most of it's income to projects all over the world.
It is not only neutral, but actually climate positive. They run on 200% renewable energy and every search request removes 1kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.

According to the website as of today they planted 120,2 million trees.
But they aim much higher.

Ecosia supports the and aims to plant 1 billion trees across the region.
They have already restored 35,000 hectares in Burkina Faso, Senegal, Mali and Ethiopia.

Help the project by making Ecosia your default search engine across all devices. Tell your family and friends to do the same and help them if they need it.

3 Ways to support the :

1. Make it famous.
Tell everybody you know about the GGW, post about it on social media, ask your local newspaper to do a report on it, ask your government to support it, if they don't already do.

2. Sign the pledge or donate on the website:

greatgreenwall.org/take-action

3. Support initiatives that work with the great green wall.

is one such initiative. If you know of any others please post them below.

= growing a forest

= growing an existing forest to it's fullest ecological potential.

= regrowing a forest where one was before. This is often done to stop and .

= growing a forest where none was before, e.g. to regenerate the soil or attract rain.

Some of my favorite forestation projects:

The of Africa - a project to stop the desertification of the Sahel region.

- the search engine that plants trees.

- invest in forestation projects across the globe.
