Inside the horror of Europe's biggest wildfire.
For weeks, the people of Lefkimi have felt helpless as almost 1,000 sq km of the forest that provided their homes and livelihoods burned.
“Send us planes now, otherwise it’ll come here,” one man pleads into the early evening sky.
Then, one after another, planes appear through the smoke over the hilltop, dousing the blaze.

The problem-material is dry underbrush that ignites large forest fires. This woody debris is flammable, which means fuel... And we love fuel!
During the WW2 gasoline shortage, many Europeans put gasifiers on their vehicles to make them run on firewood.
That's right, combustion engines can run on wood!
We could be powering our cars & our whole cities, while solving the forest fire problem. 🌲🔥😐

Genetically modified super trees (epic failure). Destroying watersheds, forests and rivers along the way. Never any funds for forest health. No money to mitigate damage or prevention. Capitalism chose “neither”. So now we import lumber while our forests burn and living things choke. The industry is now Cal Fire and the wild land fire fighters.
