Budapest, 1988. Everything about this photo of a streetside cafe, or büfé, feels Hungarian to me. It's not just the obvious clues like the language, it is the coffee pot on the stove, the shape of the glasses on the counter. Most of all it is the woman, the way she is dressed, the style of her glasses and how she holds herself. For some reason, I reckon she is called Ildikó néni (Auntie Ildiko). All very Hungarian.

Hungary, 1935. There are many family shots like this in the Fortepan archives. Everyday Hungarians photographed in a moment in time. There would be dark days ahead for this seemingly well-off family, especially the children: war, dictatorships, revolution. Note the military-style hat on the boy, reflecting the mood of the semi-facsist Horthy regime of the time.

Budapest, 1937. Life was hard for many in Hungary during the 1930's, especially the working class. The sign above the door, in this working-class part of Budapest, says "Wine" and down the side "Wine/Beer". If he could afford it, this man certainly deserves either for his labours.
