@xgqt @drj yeah, and #forgejo too. the #ForgeFed (https://forgefed.org/) stuff looks really interesting too: it makes sense to me that for distributed vcs, the quality of life features like bug tracking, code review and web interface should be distributed too. the dominance of gh in particular removes one of the main reasons git (and mercurial, bazaar, fossil, darcs, et al) chose to move away from the design of cvs/subversion
edit: it's not #FediForge…

and to support #ForgeFed :
Has anyone successfully setup #BTCPayServer to federate over #I2P network, rather than than Tor?
From this resource it would appear not:

While on the topic of #federated systems, aren't #bitcoiners embarrassed that they're on the invasive #MSGitHub platform? This question extends to #fedizens who list the #MicroShaft forge prominently in their bio.
The sooner we use alternative #forges day-to-day, or move to something like #ForgeFed the better.

@randy5235 Controlling one’s own code isn’t really the point of a package repository. It’s for software releases. The code and content (hopefully) lives in a separate #VersionControl system where changes are more granular than new version releases.
And as you note, there are efforts like #ForgeFed to enable federated software development with distributed VC, issue tracking, forking, pull requests, merging, etc.
I don’t know if it’s useful to commingle the two.
I repeat: The way SourceHut supports participation via email is the best kind of federated implementation. Git & Email are already decentralized by design, so you already can participate even without an account on SourceHut. #ForgeFed
@fasterthanlime @refi64 This is a friendly reminder that there are alternatives to Github, which is free to apply whatever policy feels right for their business. Lookup #forgefed. Like @Codeberg for example.
Yes @Codeberg #CodeBerg runs on #forgejo @forgejo - a #Gitea fork - which is working on federation. But if the protocol is established, other non-forgejo forges have to adopt it in their codebase aswell for it to work with codeberg.
#codeberg #forgejo #gitea #gnu #guix #sourcehut #forgefed #radicle
@graue @edward #GNU #Guix is not using a forge at all. Just an email list where you send issues or patches. It's hard for the uninitiated. I think you can use #SourceHut also like that. Hopefully soon there will be #ForgeFed federation so we can run our own personal git front-ends and make merge requests to one another. I hear #Gitea is working on an implementation of the protocol.
There's also #Radicle which takes a non-federated approach by being fully distributed. Also active WIP.

* Lemmy already has a foot in the door to Codeberg/forgejo and/or their own gitea server: see the thread https://lemmy.ml/comment/769383 where people who seem to be key devs @nutomic + @PureTryOut responded rapidly;
* Mastodon devs *might* be thinking of https://giveupgithub.org and #forgefed but if so, the main debate is secret: https://lemmy.ml/comment/769383
@emc2 Overall, I like your optimism :). But https://forgefed.org is not popping up overnight - a lot of work is going into it. #FOSS
@sugar_in_your_tea About "good time to jump in": the small size of the lemmy dev community gives you a chance to shift off Microsoft to a community git forge e.g. #Codeberg [1] that aims at forge federation [2] *before* there's too much #TyrannyOfConvenience inertia. Mastodon devs are reluctant to even *discuss* giving up Microsoft [3].

@nichtich There are many more related tickets, see the collection by @pere at https://codeberg.org/ForgeFed/ForgeFed/issues/174 .
Also, @hugopeixoto recently tried to get NLnet funding for such a project (but it was rejected): https://forum.forgefriends.org/t/federation-in-gitlab-nlnet-grant-proposal-maybe-december-2022/933 .
@a has been working on adding #ForgeFed support to #forgejo / #gitea for some time now: https://codeberg.org/forgejo/forgejo/issues/59
Though currently there seem to be no plans to add federation to GitLab, I am optimistic that we will see federated forges emerging in the not-too-far future.
@strypey
> limited support for federated groups
Add the lack of #FederatedIdentity and it appears that the alternative to the emperor-with-no-clothes is not wearing much either.
I shouldn't be complaining, "we" atleast have this much. But it isn't clear that one client can integrate #Mastodon, #Lemmy, #Peertube, #Pixelfed and #ForgeFed ... which makes all of them being based on #ActivityPub a technical detail. Lemmy allowing log-in via any AP account might go a long way.

The #legal team of #youtube has asked the #invidious developer to stop developing invidious.
https://github.com/iv-org/invidious/issues/3872
It is possible that #github takes the repo down as they have done the same for third party #facebook or #instagram apps. But they can't stop FOSS, can they? :)
It is obvious that GH is a very bad place to host a #foss project. But till we have #forgefed , I guess there is not other solution.

Oh @hack13 you was talking about moving off GitHub recently, I just found out again that #Forgejo is working on federation via #Forgefed (https://forgefed.org/)

I completely forgot this part while already looking into multiple time since some years :blobfoxlaughsweat:
