#TFW you get up from your desk to do something. You get out of the home office. You walk to the living room.
And...
You don't remember what you wanted to do.
😩

Today’s adhd adventure:
After posting about proceeding toward an adhd diagnosis on Facebook, I was pleasantly surprised by an outpouring of support. A woman I’ve not been in contact with since school, (32 yrs ago,) recommended a book.
I got the audio version and it’s very good so far. I was listening to it at work this evening. I paused it to sign out.
As I left work, with earbuds still in, I had to race back inside, not only for their case, but my phone too.
I forgot to do RabbitRabbit this morning. And #May Day. Must be Happy #Forgetful Day, ugh 😣
So I woke up last night and was awake long enough to come up with a great #joke that I thought I'd post on here this morning.
Then I went back to sleep.
Then chemo brain intervened.
I don't remember the damn joke.

Well, I'm a #dunce. I realized last night that I forgot a piece of networking equipment at the house my ex-wife is about to put on the market.
That's another trip for me to go there and she's going to have to be there too, because I no longer have the key. 😩
I thought I was done with making trips there.

And... I poopooed this morning. I should have taken my synthroid, but I mistakenly had a snack instead.
No biggie, I guess I'll just take my synthroid later, but I don't like it when I mess up like this.

I think I might have taken a #shower twice today because my #towel was still wet.
Chalk it up to chemo brain.

Me: (minding my own business, chillin', humming "Easy Like Sunday Mornin'.)
My phone: (Text: Hey, I'm gonna be a little late to our meeting.)
Me: OMG! I forgot I have a meeting in 15 minutes!!
So much for the chill morning. :D

Ugh, yep, I'm a dumb arse… I went out with the intention of buying some mince, some juice and some bread… walk nearly all the way to the shopping centre only to realise I left my wallet behind.
You can't buy bread if you haven't got any dough! Bugger it, it can wait until tomorrow… #forgetful

For as long as I can remember I have struggled with forgetting things. Mostly thing of the mundane variety. Doing chores that need doing, remembering to mail out a package, bringing my wallet etc. Earlier this year I got an ADHD diagnosis which made so many things from my past make sense. As a 45 year old, I've had to come up with some systems to work around me being forgetful and I figured I'd share some here. I had a few back and forth messages with @insiderphd earlier today which made me think this might be helpful to others.
One technique that's worked for me is using multiple reminders and systems rather than trying to find the "one true way". For example, if I need to remember to bring something with me when I leave the house, I'll put a post-it note in my shoe. That way, when I go to put my shoes on, I'll see the note and remember to grab my keys or whatever else I need. I also use Slack for work and have lots of reminders set up there, as well as in my reminders app. For more "serious" tasks I make it a calendar appointment.
If I think of something that doesn't have a deadline, anything I want to remember, I'll make a note in my reminders app so I don't forget to make more detailed notes later. Then if I need to remember something long-term, I'll write it down in Obsidian, which is a note-taking and knowledge management system. That's a whole other rabbit hole for another day.
The most important thing for me has been to get my thoughts and ideas out of my head as soon as possible. When I think of something, I make a reminder right away or make a note. Before, I would fret about remembering it later and almost certainly forget, which would then lead to feeling bad about forgetting. By getting it out of my head and into a physical or digital form, I create a reference point for the information, which can help me retrieve it later. It's also develop trust in your systems. If you consistently use your reminders and note-taking apps, you'll start to build trust in them and be more likely to use them in the future.
But don't get too caught up in the idea of finding the "perfect" solution. Sometimes it's better to focus on finding a "good enough" solution that works for you. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
If you're someone who tends to have many, many browser tabs open at once, consider installing a tab limiter extension. This can help reduce visual clutter and lower anxiety caused by the fear of losing important information in tabs. When you reach the tab limit, it's a good reminder to save the page to a read-later app or highlight the article and save it in your favorite note taking app. This way, you can access the information later when you have more time to read or review it, without cluttering up your browser (and your brain!) with too many tabs.
These are just a few of the things I thought I'd share. They're definitely not perfect and I'm always evolving the approach. Don't be afraid to experiment and try new things until you find what works best for you. And remember, it's okay to have those moments when you can't remember something – shit happens!
