@evemassacre Absolutely, and there seems to be a history of various folks trying to push collective governance of Mastodon. With only marginal gains (it's something, though). One key thing I only recently learned about: #ForkOff, the movement aka #forkofftogether
Should #ForkOffTogether consider working with and/or exchanging ideas & social field notes/findings with the Pleroma project?
I bet there are already people involved with both.
Regardless though the Fediverse continue to grow.
@scanlime yeah, I feel like portability between instances is a big target for improvement, right now it still feels pretty hard to just up and leave an instance.
I missed all of the #ForkOffTogether drama & as someone who just wandered in (and who has never had to run a large social network)โmaking a to disable *any* feature seems like it doesn't need to be debated at length. Maybe it's the cost of a single-controlling-entity being wrong in public. (I am sure I'd find it hard to deal with too).
I really hope #ForkOffTogether succeeds even though I'm not super likely to use what they create.
I just wanted to say that as somebody who vastly prefers "open speech" instances. I think there's absolutely room for more implementations in the fediverse, and I hope the #ForkOff folks will federate widely.
We are all building something totally new and amazing together, even though we have differing ideas as to what's best for our particular portion of it.

While filling out the #ForkOffTogether 'when could you be available for meetings?' survey, I am reminded that time zones are a thing. I'm pretty sure the one hypothetical weekday slot that *wasn't* there as a choice, despite it being perfect for me, must fall like right in the middle of the night in Europe.
Of course, a truly global effort means more coverage as things get rolling, but that ball might be hard to push at first.
May as well drop a bomb right before going to bed.
I'm sure @Gargron, as a young, inexperienced developer, has made a ton of mistakes running Mastodon. Young humans do that.
Eugen is a person. A lot of people claiming to worry about "social media harassment" seem worryingly oblivious to that as they dogpile and heap on the negativity.
You're entitled to your frustration, but don't be the problem you claim to want to solve.
Keep it positive? #ForkOffTogether and make things better?
@baldur The author overlooks the possibility for users to band together and pool resources to affect change.
A critical oversight, IMO.
That's all government is, really. It's the ultimate "society pools resources to get stuff done" - except with FOSS, instead of regulating, the govt (or any group of concerned citizens) also has the option of recruiting coders to fix things.
Example: #ForkOffTogether
FOSS isn't a panacea, but it gives people options they lack otherwise.
I love this thread by @maloki on the #ForkOffTogether survey results. https://elekk.xyz/@maloki/100184064777891255
@maloki I think your #ForkOffTogether is overly self-serving and detrimental to the community. Why don't you try what you failed here with Pleroma? #Unfollowed.
Serious q about #forkofftogether: are/were/will there be any steps taken to ensure that the organisation of this potential fork is transparent and accessible, and that people who have criticisms about xyz decision get their voices heard? Will voices not belonging to the core group be heard and given weight to?
The reason why I'm asking: what I've read so far seems very vague and secretive, and I know the project is its infancy, and some people don't want to out themselves, but...?
to the fediverse,
sorry in advance if any of my instancemates come off as rude or disrespectful, especially over the next couple of days. I promise it's not intentional - we're just really, really excited and eager to help!
so plz don't hesitate to point it out whenever a social dot cooper gets a lil too cooperative and starts butting into #forkofftogether convos or won't shut the fuck up about co-ops. something something they know not what they do (which is why you should tell them)
Importing repositories from Github to Gitlab takes time.
I'm still worried, although less by Github than by the strange #forkofftogether thing that seems to be a waste of energy. Not mine though.
#deletegithub #forkofftogether
#forkoff discussion proving very interesting.
I really hope that the actors involved can start to look to the motivations/interests of each other and think about if there is a way forward together, rather than a split.
Though having said all that - I think given the reasons for the split (differences over governance effectively) this could be a positive long term. Hope #forkofftogether peeps have a look at the #socialcoop model (nascent as it is).

What's the general vibe on #socialcoop about #forkofftogether?
I get the feeling I'm missing something, and lot more is going on than meets the eye...
But it does seem to fundamentally to be a debate about how we manage/develop/govern distributed platforms.
I've seen @Antanicus make some strong points about the potential #fosscoop approach to these challenges - but then many of us know that making something a #coop doesn't work in *all* circumstances...
Thoughts? :)
