A quotation from Martin, Judith:

Teacup formality is a part of etiquette, but an infinitesimal part. How about fast-food informality? That is as much a part of etiquette as the teacup. It is all of our behavior and not simply the formal occasion behavior. And, in fact, the more informal the circumstances, usually the more you need etiquette.

It can be difficult to deal with the difference in #formality between #English and #French. With students, I therefore suggest we use first names in English, and first name + “vous” in French, which seems to me the closest approximation in formality.
Any thoughts by native speakers of either language? (University context.)

"I hold an unpopular view. I believe, firmly and invariably, that life in the 21st century is too informal and empty of ritual, and that we should encourage and erect more needless formality. Formality, ritual and ceremony – not casual approachability – are among the most effective ways of making the world and its institutions more inclusive and egalitarian. We all need much more formality in our lives."
