Fort Macon housed military during the Civil War and Word War II. Today it is one of the most popular state parks in North Carolina. Both canon from the War Between the States and artillery used to guard Beaufort Inlet from German U-boats are on display.

I visited the beach at Fort Macon State Park on the evening of December 30, 2022. For most of the year the park closes too early to enjoy the sunset. For a few short weeks during the winter, however, the gate closes after the sun sets. It is an opportunity I simply cannot resist!
