#tv tonight: episode 4 of Fortress Britain with Alice Roberts (aired 15/4/23, https://www.channel4.com/programmes/fortress-britain-with-alice-roberts/on-demand/74745-004 ).
Having done three invasions that failed to materialise the series finished out with The One That Did™, the Last One That Did™ – the Norman Conquest. Not the initial battle but the slow grind of consolidating power afterwards: the debacle of the coronation, the Harrying of the North, Hereward the Wake etc.

#tv tonight: episode 3 of Fortress Britain with Alice Roberts (aired 8/4/23, https://www.channel4.com/programmes/fortress-britain-with-alice-roberts/on-demand/74745-003 ).
The Cold War and the ways we tried to protect ourselves from the apocalypse – from building our own bombs to public information campaigns. Most of the latter feel daft in retrospect: bombs got so much more powerful so quickly that "shelter behind doors in your living room, popping out occasionally to put out fires" would be a non-starter.

#tv tonight: ep 2 of Fortress Britain with Alice Roberts (aired 1/4/23, https://www.channel4.com/programmes/fortress-britain-with-alice-roberts/on-demand/74745-002 ).
More WW2, but given the series theme this was looking at the preparations in the summer of 1940 for the expected invasion by the Germans.
A reminder that we were really rather lucky that the war stayed (mostly) over there & not over here. Mostly, because of course there was the Blitz but also the Channel Islands /were/ invaded and occupied.

#tv tonight: ep 1 of Fortress Britain with Alice Roberts (aired 25/3/21, https://www.channel4.com/programmes/fortress-britain-with-alice-roberts ).
Looking at British (English?) history through the lens of fear of invasion, starting with Henry VIII. This episode looking at the fallout of the break with Rome in terms of feeling like the Catholic bits of Europe (like France) now wanted to invade. So pop-up castles all around the coast, and a beefing up of the navy & its guns.
