Coelophysis is probably the most famous dinosaur from the Chinle Formation. It was originally thought to be a cannibal due to its stomach remains (but now thought to be unrelated digested-reptiles)

That new is little and podgy, so deserves to be drawn. Here it is snacking on some Ginkgo apodes, surrounded by a collection of ferns, bennettitaleans and the Early flower Leefructus.

Let's take a closer look at some of the fossils we currently have on display at the Centre.

that mammoth teeth (aka molars), are common fossils in the Yukon? Mammoth molars are very distinctive, with hard vertical enamel plates. Because these plates formed a flat grinding surface, mammoth teeth were well suited to breaking down the tough grasses that flourished in Beringia during the last glacial period.

For let‘s talk skeletal mounts: What’s not to love, you can see ancient creatures in lifelike poses and full size - if it weren‘t for the all the missing bits and pieces!? Enter this wonderful exhibit of a 120000 yo straight tusked elefant on display in newly designed Natural History Museum , . I just love the elegant metalwork.

This is an impression of the bony armor surrounding Stegosaurus' throat for this ! These small, bony ossicles would have served as valuable protection. This specimen is housed at the Prehistoric Museum in Price, Utah. (1/2)

This week for we have another that .

This one I would rate as hard. This mid sized stegosaurid, is known for the spikes extending off its shoulder.

Reminder: hide your answer behind a CW. This will allow others to guess without a hint. I will post the answer tomorrow (and to anyone who guesses correctly).

The body was designed by kongzilla, and reworked to be a new species by me.

As drought impacts the state of Texas, researchers at Dinosaur Valley State Park, are newly discovering dinosaur footprints that have been submerged beneath the waters of the Paluxy River.

Researchers believe that the 75 footprints were likely made by two different dinosaurs - Acrocanthosaurus and Sauroposeidon proteles (the Texas state dinosaur)

Happy !

This weeks is .

In 1900, Henry Fairfield Osborn suggested that Central Asia may have been the origin point of most animals.
This led Roy Chapman Andrews to take three expeditions to China and Mongolia in 1916-17, 1919, and 1921-1930.

In late 1922 at the Flaming Cliffs in the Gobi Desert, a juvenile skull was found, that would become the holotype for Protoceratops.

In 1923, the expedition prospected the same area again and found more material.

Busy day in the old San Diego Natural History Museum paleo lab. Can't wait for the new, improved, and larger paleo lab under construction!

(Yes, those are two rolls of toilet paper. We use it to pack voids in fossils before we cover them in cling wrap so we can make a fiberglass-and-plaster cradle for storage of large and always delicate fossils.)

Sometimes I go to museums and forget to take pictures of plaques, or just get wide sweeping shots of the collections. Since I didn’t know about Mastodon or most of my fossil pics are purely for me since my friends and family never had the same interest in that I did.

For todays Fossil Friday, have some assorted pictures from my favorite museum, Fukui Prefectoral Dinosaur Museum, an amazing musuem in that I am so happy I took the time to visit during my trip.
