@Judeet98 which isn't a good thing & is precisely why we need #PR. #Labour are too dependent on the goodwill of voters such as myself who will vote Labour in order to get out the #Tories. Not because I think Labour are a better option (I would much rather vote #Green) but because #fptp prevents me from doing anything else. #proportionalrepresentation would (in my opinion) make #politics far more honest & interesting.

@rrwo @fuck_cars_bot They didn't, though. That's just Greg Hands trying to spin the victory as being about his pet obsession, instead of being about Labour and LibDems splitting the vote in a #FPTP system.
Honestly, #Uxbridge?
Ok. Have now recovered. The lesson in this is: with very low turnout, very close results, and all three progressive parties standing against each other, #Tories can still win seats. (If those 893 #Green had gone to #Labour, Tories would have lost).
I am a Green Party member but given where we are at, #FPTP and 13 years of Tory ruin, surely #tacticalvoting is key

Did the Liberals promise #ProportionalRepresentation ? I remember they said that would be the last election using #FPTP , but as I recall their desire was to replace it with the #PreferentialBallot .
(I favour preferential voting for municipal elections in Canada.)

I know we’re probably heading for a Labour landslide at the next general election. But I think I’d prefer a Labour/Liberal Democrat coalition just to force Starmer to support proportional representation.
The current UK voting system is a winner takes all model so every vote for a unsuccessful candidate isn’t represented in the make up of Parliament. In a democracy, every vote should count.

Look, the MPs being vocal are the very same ones who voted for #Johnson, supported Johnson and encouraged Johnson. The issue is the #ConservativeParty itself and the #FPTP #Electoral process.
Remove FPTP and The Conservative Party will never win another #Election again. It's that simple.

@TheEconomist That could be interesting. Split the vote on the Right, should result in a Labour landslide. Expect the Tories to suddenly discover that #FPTP voting is a Good Thing after all.
"With the Conservatives still suffering from a large polling deficit, Labour’s support was found to be at about 35% – 12% ahead of Rishi Sunak’s party."
In this #PerfectlyNormalCountry, a party with 35% of the popular vote can win absolute power. Fancy that!
#perfectlynormalcountry #labour #fptp
IMHO neither Labour or Conservatives are worth voting for.
We effectively have no party to vote for under the present system of first past the post (#FPTP).
A general election will therefore not produce a satisfactory result under #FPTP.
A coalition with other parties hasn't solved anything in the past either as there are too many differences of opinion.
Time for a proportional representation system to give smaller parties like the #GreenParty a look in.
There's an upcoming election which is likely to have useful results for my communities, but I also prefer to subvert "first past the post" systems whenever possible so I offered my vote to the secondary school kids at my local bus stop. I told them there are two conditions:
a. They reach a group agreement (I provided decision-making resources based on consensus processes - plural - but they were responsible for choosing their own method).
b. They give at least two reasons for their chosen candidate (individual not party).
Result: a decision based on unanimity-minus-one (who recused himself rather than blocking - he claimed he's not interested enough to participate) and they've learned about decision-making processes not based on majority voting. I also think their candidate will win and is the most likely to serve our communities but that's beside the point.

Our broken political system needs fixing but what will it take to get a fair voting system in place with these undemocratic forces at play?
@chrisshaw @fencoul @StrangeNoises @Lazarou @newstatesman I’m in #Cheltenham (Tory/LibDem marginal). I used to vote Green in the EU #PR elections and it’s the only time in the last 15 years of voting that I got what I wanted. Would love to vote Green for Westminster but absolutely no chance. I voted Labour in the past but knew I was throwing my vote away. It’s going to have to be Lib Dem. I hate voting negatively but have no choice. #FPTP is disenfranchising millions of us
[thread (of mine) from an old account]
Back in the early’90s New Zealand was debating whether it should change its democratic voting system from First-Past-the-Post #FPTP to a proportional system #PR as it had been a long time since a government had commanded a clear majority of the electorate, and public disapproval of the situation had become an issue.
So the government eventually decided to run a referendum to see if the electorate really wanted a change.

Welsh premier #MarkDrakeford...
"If Labour is to save the union, we can’t do that by defending the status quo — by nervously hoarding power at the centre, as this Tory government has done."
Drakeford's English boss #KeirStarmer immediately dismissed the #PrifWeinidog's criticism of #FPTP and call for #PR.

@Barbegr1s the idea that any individual MP is democratically elected in this country is a joke. Corbyn was elected in spite of his politics, not because of it.
First Past The Post (the current voting system) is extremely unfair.
A good voting system should have the total number of seats gained be directly reflected by the total votes won. FPTP fails in this.
This means that the party winning the most votes nationally is not guaranteed to win any seats.
@MatthewToad42 @fencoul @OliverNoble
Didn't the coalition government give us a referendum on this, and didn't the great British public vote to keep #FPTP
