The sibling experience is unique - tricky, fun and everything inbetween.

The UK charity Sibs supports siblings and the unique relationship they have with their disabled brothers or sisters. Sibs knows this role needs to be recognised.

1. We showed that there is a sublinear integration of synaptic inputs in the basal dendrites of L5 pyramidal neurons in Fmr1-KO mice.
2. We then sought to identify the mechanism for this sublinear integration of spine activation in the basal dendrites of Fmr1-KO L5 pyramidal neurons. We focused our attention on the presence and role of large conductance calcium-activated potassium (BK) channels

3. Our results studied the expression of the BK channel and its β4-subunit in the neocortex of WT versus Fmr1-KO mice. Our results showed that there is a neocortical excitatory synaptic enrichment of the β4-subunit in Fmr1-KO mice.

4. Importantly, we showed that the knock-down of the BK channel β4 subunit in L5 pyramidal neurons of Fmr1-KO mice rescues the subthreshold linear integration of synaptic inputs.

5. Biophysical simulations of synaptic integration in Fmr1-KO and WT L5 pyramidal neurons showed that the sublinear integration of excitatory inputs could be explained by an increased number of synaptically activated BK channels upon β4 subunit binding in Fmr1-KO mice.

6. These results reveal a hyposensitivity of basal integration of sensory inputs in Fmr1-KO L5 pyramidal neurons through a mechanism dependent on the interaction between BK channels and the β4 subunit.

7. Our work adds to our understanding of FXS by providing a picture where the differential integration of feedforward and feedback inputs in cortical pyramidal neurons could be at the core of the cellular basis of FXS.

Haven’t done my #introduction yet. I’m a scientist @ Loyola NOLA in #neuroscience, but study a mixed bag. Major focus on #autism, #EhlersDanlos, & #FragileX but I also study genetics & have veered into the lane of #EvolutionaryBiology, investigating the roles of developmental regulatory & dosage-sensitive genes in macroevolutionary patterns in the fossil record (read: #punkeek). I’m less a rockhound & more a computer-hound. I’m also currently building a class on #NervousSystem #Evolution. 🧠

Good morning, just a quick #introduction firstly this is my main man (my dog) saying hurry up and finish breakfast I’m lonely.
A little bit about me, I’m a carer for my husband who is unwell. I’m a mum and a grand mum. My daughter is a nurse and my granddaughter is on her way to being a nurse. My grandson has #fragilex and that’s a genetic condition and he has a disability, he lives a very happy active life and he is the most loving person I know.
I like a bit of politics, I want to help improve living conditions for those in Australia. I would love to improve our planet by saving animals and the land. I guess the best way to say it is..I will love and help whomever I can, I have no room for hate or bias against anyone, so if you discriminate against anyone for any reason I’m probably not your type of person.
My past times are knitting and crocheting, I do this for free for hospitals, maternity wards, and shelters.
I am a survivor of domestic violence and still have little insecurities about men, so please no messages or creepy call-outs.
I’m a Twitter user and I hope we can be friends ❤️
