I can happily write in numerous languages but I've never done (beyond occasionally having to read other people's code). What REALLY puts me off is the trillion different . There seems to be a new 'must have' framework every week, then it's considered dead the week after. I can't be bothered to invest the energy into learning something so transient. Relying on other people's frameworks feels very lazy to me. I'd rather learn the core well.

I donā€™t normally post links to YouTube, but the new Fairphone 5 has been launched in Europe today, and itā€™s an absolute paradigm changer. Apple and Google need to rethink their strategy.

This is when becomes a BETTER designed phone than something sealed and unrepairable.

The link is to the new tear down. Like is where I think real innovation is happening. So exciting to see.

Many urldecode the url before doing url based routing. So they can't distinguish these URLs:

/users/tom/edit
/users/tom%2Fedit

I'm baffled. Does anyone have a quick reference describing why this is wrong? And as in this discussion, why a HTTP reverse proxy that unescapes URL-encodings before forwarding the request would be breaking all sorts of things, even though it is technically possible?

After seeing what has been up to, Iā€™m even more excited to see what the team at will come up with when they launch version 5, rumored for September.

If either /e/OS or can develop around it, then we have some exciting options.

ā€œThere is a lot of work happening in this space, especially in the Web Components communities and the CSS WG, though we are nowhere near having reactivity primitives that are native to the platform yet.ā€

This is a nice overview of the frameworks conversation.

I wonder if @htmx_org qualifies as "reactivity primitives native to the platform"?

I feel the same! With my latest hobby project (link in my profile), I kept the UI as simple as possible to not waste time with selecting, learning, using & fighting one of the millions of .

But the time will come when I have to replace that UI with one that looks attractive. I'll use Web for that; I used it for another project and am absolutely in love with that framework and !

So I'm actually looking forward to coding that UI. Weird.

Big news! Since December I've been partnering with newline.co to write a course on , one of the leading cross-platform for mobile and desktop apps, and I need readers.

The course is written for developers who already know a statically-typed, object-oriented programming language and want to jump into mobile app development as quickly as possible.

Access is , but limited seats are available.

My head hurts... I've been trying to wrap my head around desktop application .

Does anyone have any good resources to :

What desktop front end let you use any back end language??????

How in the world do you connect back end languages to front end frameworks?

I'm back at my tower now [which system remains, frankly, superb], but for several hours earlier i was using my 38 lappy. After finishing all my usual browsing & such on it, i did the 200+ pkg update backlog i've been ignoring for a few days. Watching all the pkgs downloading via in , i shook my head in admiration... continues to keep up really well with Arch, not only with the desktop itself, but also & . šŸ’œ

It. Did. Not. Used. To. Be. This. Good, some years ago, so, since at least early this year, otherwise maybe late last year, something wunnerful happened wrt active support of KDE by Fedora. Nowadays it is, to be blunt, bloody excellent... kudos & thanks! šŸŽ‰

remains the holder of my heart, but if it went away tomorrow, i'd replace it with KFedora .

IMO, anyone who somehow dislikes , but loves KDEPlasma, who atm inclines to KDE, or KDE in some / thing [ergo you get stuck with obsolete versions], really should seriously consider KFedora.

@mathiasringhof Hello. Tbh, IMO the way categorises, names & discusses various parts of its "software package infrastructure" is confusing, indeed even baffling, for many potential users. I'll use as my comparator here, given that Arch keeps up nicely with the KDE release cycle, unlike Debian.

At the moment...

:
- = 5.27.5
- = 23.04.1
- = 5.106.0

Do these Wikipedia articles help you to understand the differences?

- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE_Plas
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE_Gear
- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KDE_Fram

So, for instance, if a distro uses old versions of Gear, users will be stuck with old versions of important user-apps like , , . Otoh, with old versions of Frameworks, users are stuck with superseded versions of "behind the scenes" system-tools & libraries like KActivities, KIO, Kirigami. Finally, Plasma itself provides the actual desktop experience. IMO distros really MUST keep up with Plasma, but i sincerely believe that to then fall behind on Gear & Frameworks leaves users with a non-optimal total experience.

@linuxiac Yes, but *old* & . Ergo, i continue to NOT see the point of using on .

A rolling DE needs a rolling distro, to enjoy the *full* KDEPlasma UX.
